Micro-credentials open higher ed to those looking to broaden skills

Micro-credentials open higher ed to those looking to broaden skills | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Analysts look at badges as a way for adults to get career-oriented skills that are marketable. Even though elite schools have the benefit of name recognition, micro-credentials could get applicants far by showing, in detail, the skills they have mastered and how they had to prove it. Just as they started offering their own MOOCs when that was seen as an industry game-changer, traditional colleges and universities are increasingly experimenting with micro-credentials to keep up with the innovation curve.

2014: Badges for Learning: a review of the formative role of badges in two open online courses

2014: Badges for Learning: a review of the formative role of badges in two open online courses | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Simon Cross, Open University, UK

The emergence of open online learning courses brings in to sharp relief the viability of existing forms of teacher provided formative and summative assessment. For such courses that carry no charge for participation alternative structures for engaging, motivating and sustaining study need to be sought. Badges or similar such visual public symbols that communicate to others a particular quality, achievement or affiliation possessed by the owner may have a role to play. This session will cover some potential social and psychological roles for badges and then report on the reception and use of badges in two 'massive' open online courses delivered in 2013. This will highlight the varied functions badges performed with particular attention to how they may support and guide learning in a 'formative' capacity during a course and the need for effective pedagogic design and alignment of the course badging strategy. This discussion will draw upon data from end of courses surveys that specifically asked about badges, pre-course surveys, and user comments made during the course such as on Twitter.

The start time will be 07:00 UST/GMT (duration 1 hour approx). See your equivalent local time. http://timeanddate.com/s/2hw9

Now you can earn game achievements in learning new things. Considering how popular this simple idea seems to be in gaming, it should be effective. Some form of feedback, especially if it is immediate and pleasing in some way, is usually helpful.

I don't know if this will replace paid credits, but it is a start toward a new paradiam

Paul Avila's curator insight, November 30, 2013 9:57 PM

This is an interesting idea to use in the classroom. It would motivate students to improve their skills to achieve these badges. I would suggest implementing these with some incentive system so that students pursue these badges instead of earning them passively as useless labels. These badges can be useful to track progress of historical thinking skills.

Using Badges in Moodle

Using Badges in Moodle | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
The Harvard Business Review named elearning badges as one of the most innovative trends to watch in 2013, and two years later, lms badge functionalities have only gotten better. A digital Moodle badge is essentially an online recognition of your achievements and skills. If a user has a number of certifications, for example, they can receive and display lms badges online to recognize their achievement or competency. Moodle badges can be given out based on a number of different achievements or criteria. With the ability to track a recipient’s communities of online interaction, a Moodle badge will show the work completed, and the outcomes learned to achieve said badge.

Moodle Badges are a great motivation and engagement tool to award students for their progress and hard work. It is a simple, yet effective way of accrediting learning. Moodle Badges motivate students who have received them to work hard to gain more, and they motivate other students to work hard to gain their own badges. Badges can be managed at either the course or site level.

Badges come in two varieties. First, there are site badges. These can be used across Moodle, and are offered for activities that are site-wide, such as completing a set of courses. Second there are course badges, which are awarded for activities within a specific course.

Students can view each other’s badges by going to the “Participants” tab on the Navigation bar, and clicking on the user’s course profile. Teachers can both add, and manage badges in their courses, as long as the administrator has enabled course badges in Administration>Site administration>Badges settings. Teachers can also add their own badges, with a title, issuer (i.e. teacher) detail, badge expiry date, and criteria for receiving the badge.

If you are managing your own Moodle badges, you can do so by going to Navigation>My profile>My badges. You can also view all available course badges at Navigation>Current course>Badges. You can see what badges other students in the course has, by going to Navigation>Participants, and clicking on the user’s profile.
