After Russia said on Monday it would end the Black Sea Grain Initiative – a deal to provide safe export routes for about 20 per cent of the world’s grain – governments have been trying to assess the impact on world hunger. Ukraine, sometimes called the breadbasket of Europe, is a major producer of sunflower oil, wheat and maize, but when Russia invaded in February 2022, turning much of the agriculturally rich east of the country into a warzone, wheat prices were hit hardest amid a general surge in global food prices.

The outlook for 2023 winter crops production has been deteriorating rapidly in western Mediterranean countries since the publication of the first MED-Amin Early Harvest Forecasting Bulletin at the end of March. The seasonal drought is hampering crops in most of the Maghreb area, in particular in Tunisia with crop failure potentials. In Spain and Portugal, the situation has critically deteriorated, with entire regions suffering from lack of rainfalls and soil moisture (with temperatures significantly warmer than seasonal average).

This is an excellent opportunity to analyse the deep routed impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Black Sea grain and oilseeds exports in the MENA region. Leading industry executives will debate opportunities to diversify sources of supply while addressing its implications on freight and trade execution, as well as the initiatives undertaken by MENA governments to ensure a stable, traceable and secure domestic food market. At a time of strong market volatility, the conference represents a platform to discuss risk management solutions, for the benefit of private and public importers alike.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has exposed the vulnerabilities, corruption, and violence behind the energy system. It is also accelerating a global food crisis. Some regions are more strongly impacted than others. Like the Covid-19 crisis, this war is affecting agriculture, food production, and directly threatening food security.
