Read this post CAREFULLY as you may recognize where you are on Jaana's timeline of personal brand development. There are several "inside baseball" tips to pay particular attention to including:

* Don't worry about perfection, start publishing.
* G+ is an AMAZING and vastly under used tool (start there add more social nets later).
* No matter what, keep turning the crank (keep going) since the only sin you and your personal band can't recover from is NOT PLAYING.

Great comment MizWalidah. I wold modify one point. Instead of "continually optimizing your meta keywords and tags" I would find ways to ping in fresh content such as User Generated Content from reviews or comments. Once a website I've SEOed is inside of Google's algorithm changing meta values that matter (mostly the page's title) can HURT SEO. I change titles VERY VERY carefully since the first rule of SEO is DO NO DAMAGE. The QDF (Quality Deserves Freshness) movement post Panda and Penguin LOVES it when a page pings, so I love the 1% of visitors who are willing to comment, review or otherwise contribute User Generated Content.

I DON'T play with meta nearly as much as you imply since to do so can look SPAMMY and cause real harm. The most important idea is creating content other people want to share. This is why I love GAMES and CONTESTS especially for bands. High engagement content such as Contests and Games can help with SEO and they can help create a distinct brand all bands need. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but be careful about meta (especially title) changes. Marty

The perfect tweet consists of three main parts: your message, a link and blank space. Here's what each section should include:

Message:

Call to action: Tell readers what you want them to do.Hashtags: Include one or two to increase your reach among people who don't follow you.Tone: Use your own voice, but in a professional way.Format: Use a mix of headlines, questions and statistics to drive clicks and retweets.

Link:

Shortened URLs: Bit.ly links earn the most retweets.

Blank space:

Leave room for at least 20 characters at the end of your tweet so retweeters can add comments.

5 Headline Creation Secrets

 General Rule - I try to live by the billboard 7-word rule. Sometimes I stretch headlines to 10 or 11 words and those titles rarely work as well as the short, sharp ones. 


 

Here are 5 Secrets To Create Great Headlines. 


Tip 1 Use Clichés
Clichés are sticky, that's why we remember them. When you turn a cliché upside down your readers will be hooked and want to untangle it. Using clichés is what the Heath brothers mean when they say sell the unknown from the known in their excellent book Made To Stick.  

Example Cliché Rework
Money Is Root Of Evil Except With Mobile Wallet
iPhone: Best Phone Since Sliced Bread

The second example shows another little trick. Sometimes I use a cliche in a way that doesn't make sense. Leave a little mystery in your headlines because the role of the headline is to convert browsers to readers. 


Tip 2 Shock A Little

Shock and surprise work great, but cross the line between shock for good and just making people mad and you can lose readers. I like to combine this tip with Tip 3 Use Humor.

A Naked Woman, An iPhone, A Bar, What's Your Question?
Does Google Still Matter?


Shock can come from out of place contrasts (naked women in bars is not usual) or an early statement many may be thinking but no one has articulated in a succinct way yet. If your headline is better you might wind more social shares on content you curate from others. If your headlie creates a new readership be sure to credit your source. 



Tip 3 Steal From Great Authors and Popular Culture
I like to lift or rework pop culture or well-known literature. Shakespeare played an important role in our education, so I riff of William frequently.

Out Damned Spot Twitter Says To Pinterest (Macbeth)
To Be Or Not To Be Is The Question For Facebook (Hamlet)

I flag beautiful phrases with an eye toward mashing the author's hard work into a headline when I read. 


 

Tip 4 Ask And Then Answer A Question
When you read a question your mind begins answering. I have two variations of the Q&A headline. One is ask and then answer the other is ask and leave open.

Example Q&A
Is Content Marketing The New SEO? A: YES
Is Content Marketing The New SEO?

I answer when I'm looking to reinforce authority. I leave open when mystery might prompt the click better pure judgment call. 



Tip 5 Create Alliteration Or Rhymes & Use Numbers
Words that have the same sound can create authority, cohesion and plant a good "should read this" hook. I mashed this tip up a bit to include several common headline elements. I do mash alliteration, rhymes and numbers sometimes.

Spiders still need context Brian so you note to the designer was correct. Correct alt text has been a particular challenge for me with many designers. I prefer to have file names with keywords too, but good luck selling that idea to a designer (lol). M

I love  Haiku Deck tool and figured out a way to add our decks to our blog:

I've been prodding  Adam Traitt, one of Haiku's founders, for a user profile (done) and more control over display (Haiku Deck team is working on it). In the mean time I decided to add my decks to Curagmai's  blog. Here's how we did it. 

*How To Add Haiku Deck To Your WP Blog*

1. Create a new Haiku Deck category on your blog. 

2. Create posts for every Haiku Deck to be added. You may want to use a date from last year or the year before to fool WordPress into moving your new Haiku Deck posts to the back of your stack. 

3.Create a grid we used WP Ultimate Post Grid and we upgraded to premium for the ability to filter by category. 

4. Redirect your WP posts to your Haiku Deck (we cheated and used the Twitter links, better to grab the nasty URL you can find in the embed area since we will drive up our Twitter share numbers artificially) we used Redirection plugin by John Godley. 

We wrote copy into this page mostly for   reasons. You can see a grid without copy here; http://www.curagami.com/magazines-2/ ;

We also use embedded  feeds behind the "Magazines" link. Each "Magazine" is firing from our Scoop.it feeds. This is how we see "websites" changing. Instead of a place where you creating everything tomorrow's sites will share your creations from all over and encourage visitors to collaborate and share too. I’m seeing more Scoopit links in my Twitter stream and I’m not crazy about it.  Sure it’s quick and easy to share with Scoopit.  But it not quick and easy to consume. For me it's all about the econ...

Marty Note (here is comment I wrote on Dr. V's blog)

Appreciate Bryan’s and Joseph’s comment, but I rarely use Scoop.it as a pass through. More than 90% of the time I’m adding “rich snippets” to content I Scoop.

Rich snippets are “blog” posts that fall between Twitter and the 500 to 1,000 words I would write in Scenttrail Marketing. I often create original content ON Scoop.it because whatever I’m writing falls in the crack between Twitter’s micro blog and what I think of as needing to be on my marketing blog.


I was taught NOT to pass through links on Scoop.it early on by the great curator @Robin Good . Robin has well over 1M views on Scoop.it now and his advice along with the patient advice of other great Scoop.it curators has my profile slouching toward 150,000 views.


Bryan is correct that some curators new to Scoop.it haven’t learned the Robin Good lesson yet. I agree it is frustrating to go to a link and not receive anything of value back, to simply need to click on another link. Curators who pass through links won’t scale, so the Darwinian impact will be they will learn to add value or die out.


For my part I always identify my Scoop.it links, probably about half the content I Tweet and about a quarter of my G+ shares. I also routinely share my favorite “Scoopiteers”, great content curators who taught me valuable lessons such as don’t simply pass through links but add “micro blogging” value via rich snippets.


When you follow or consistently share content from a great curator on Scooop.it you begin to understand HOW they shape the subjects they curate. I know, for example, Robin Good is amazing on new tools. Scoop.it anticipated this learning and built in a feature where I can suggest something to Robin.


This is when Scoop.it is at its most crowdsourcing best because I now have an army of curators who know I like to comment on and share content about design or BI or startups and they (other Scoopiteers) keep an eye out for me. There are several reasons Scoop.it is a “get more with less effort” tool and this crowdsourcing my curation is high on the list.


So, sorry you are sad to see Scoop.it links and understand your frustration. You’ve correctly identified the problem too – some curators don’t know how to use the tool yet. I know it is a lot to ask to wait for the Darwinian learning that will take place over generations, but Scoop.it and the web have “generations” that have the half life of a gnat so trust that the richness of the Scoop.it community will win in the end and “the end” won’t take long.


To my fellow Scoop.it curators we owe Bryan and Joseph thanks for reminding us of what Robin Good taught me – add value or your Scoop.it won’t scale. That lessons is applicable to much more than how we use Scoop.it.

That’s fine if you just enjoy socializing for the sake of socializing (and, actually, the best social networkers are people like that usually). However, if you’re spending marketing dollars and the prosperity of your business depends on the success of your social networking, you’d better do a bit more than socialize.

 

1. The Question You’d Better Answer First
Why are you interested in social networking? To build your business? How, exactly?Do you sell online or just promote online? Are you locally, nationally, or internationally focused? Do you want people to talk about your business online, share your links, spread the word about you, learn more about you, recommend you, sign up for a program, get a free sample, get your e-newsletter, read your blog, interact with you, ask questions, get a membership, order a product, pay for a service, refer you to their friends?
