Teaching how to think is just as important as teaching anything else

A new paper on teaching critical thinking skills in science has pointed out, yet again, the value of giving students experiences that go beyond simple recall or learned procedures.

Start early to teach students how to reason, critical thinking will develop naturally. Foster their  inquisitive abilities by keeping them focused and there will be no need to memorize. It is possible to develop effective thinkers when they are involved in the learning process rather than just recipients of information.

Teaching with Content Curation

Teaching with Content Curation | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it

"Content curation is “…the process of collecting, organizing and displaying information relevant to a particular topic. Teacher content curation can be used by students and students can be asked to show expertise with examples of curation.” In my 8th grade ICT class we will be completing webquests on content curation as a teach method of introducing students to “Content Curation.” The following text reviews what content curation is and it’s purpose, along with several content curation platforms, what a webquest is, and followed by a lesson plan I will use in my classes..."

How Teachers Use Technology: The Latest Research

How Teachers Use Technology: The Latest Research | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it

Back in 2011, I wrote a post about the "New Digital Divide." Based on Pew Research data from 2011, it was apparent that, while many previously marginalized populations now had more access to the Internet, these populations were accessing the Internet mostly through mobile devices, which are limiting, especially when trying to build and create online or access job applications or opportunities. Just this past week, Pew released a new study called How Teachers Are Using Technology at Home and in Their Classrooms. It explores how teachers use the Internet for their own professional learning, with their students and for communicating with families.

Highly trained, respected and free: why Finland's teachers are different

Highly trained, respected and free: why Finland's teachers are different | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it
Welcome to a country where teaching is a highly prized profession. Finland’s teachers have kept the nation near the top of the influential Pisa performance rankings since they were first published in 2001, leading to an influx of educational tourists as other teachers have endeavoured to learn from the Finnish experience.

The high-level training is the basis for giving young teachers a great deal of autonomy to choose what methods they use in the classroom – in contrast to England, Krokfors says, where she feels teaching is “somewhere between administration and giving tests to students”. In Finland, teachers are largely free from external requirements such as inspection, standardised testing and government control; school inspections were scrapped in the 1990s.

“Teachers need to have this high-quality education so they really do know how to use the freedom they are given, and learn to solve problems in a research-based way,” Krokfors says. “The most important thing we teach them is to take pedagogical decisions and judgments for themselves.”

THE PADAGOGY WHEEL: Thanks for reposting this. I thought some might find my 1.57 min video thought provoking. In it I introduce this wheel and more research I am working on with graduate attributes, Please visit http://tinyurl.com/padwheelvid which will be redirected to YouTube. I am calling the method the CAMERA Method .. "Capabilities and Attributes Mapping for Educational Results inspiring Achievement" ... it's all about the students being all they can be. It is about mapping everything back to graduate attributes, values and capabilities These are more than learning outcomes, they are an attempt to define a graduate.

They might also be interested in the podcast episode I did with Prof Geoff Scott of the Uni of Western Sydney. He has done years of research into graduate capabilities (aka values or attributes) It is fascinating stuff in the context of Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. This is what the respective industries in the market place want in graduates. Duh! Look at the list and ask yourself are they being developed in students from Higher Education or in Education in general ... this is why mapping is so important. Are we equipping graduates to excel and make a difference .... hmmm! Have a look and listen to http://tinyurl.com/alsltblog. "If you exercise these capabilities ... you will be employed!" This sort of stuff makes the CAMERA method worth developing. Comments are invited ... regards Allan.
