38 maps that explain the global economy

38 maps that explain the global economy | Educational Technology Applications | Scoop.it
Commerce knits the modern world together in a way that nothing else quite does. Almost anything you own these days is the result of a complicated web of global interactions. And there's no better way to depict those interactions than some maps.

Occasionally these lists that say something like "40 maps that..." end up being an odd assortment of trivia that is interesting but not very instructive; but I am of a fan of these list produced by Vox.  Not because they exhaustively explain the topic, but they give a strong visual introduction to a topic, such as this one on on the global economy.

Tags: development, economic, globalization, industry, labor, unit 6 industry..

Jacob Crowell's curator insight, September 20, 1:09 PM

I went through a number of these, and I found the map alcohol consumption interesting. Geography has to affect social norms such as drinking alcohol. In colder climates, more people seem more likely to warm up with a drink, also staying inside and not being able to be active outdoors also would lead to passing the time drinking.

Jacob Crowell's curator insight, September 20, 12:25 PM

This video is a great introduction to mans impact on the environment.  Although the degree to which man is able to manipulate nature has increased dramatically, I would argue that this is not a new development. Ancient Civilizations manipulated waterways for irrigation and decimated vegetation thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution.

HelloTalk - A language learning community on your mobile

HelloTalk - A language learning community on your mobile | Educational Technology Applications | Scoop.it

I've always liked the idea of language exchanges and peer learning as the learning tends to be driven by and through an authentic desire to communicate. HelloTalk is a wonderful example of this, but with lots of nice features to make the process mobile and more efficient. Most of these features are accessed by pressing down on your partner's text to get the pop up tool bar.
