The New York Times Bits Blog is reporting that totally immersive three-dimensional environments, similar to the holodeck in Star Trek, could be a reality by the year 2024.
Now that would be a gaming revolution!
Not sure if this is leadership, but so fricking cool! As a long time trekkie, I had to share.

Since the release of the Oculus Rift development kit, many major game developers have been experimenting with virtual reality in their labs. Now, another one of them has come forward in support of the technology: Sony Online Entertainment, the company behindEverQuest.
More than a rumor: something the President of Sony Online Entertainment confirmed.
Question is whether it will add to the gameplay or make it cumbersome?
I've tried a prototype game with those goggles and it's pretty cool but I can't say I would have stayed immersed forever. The thing that struck me is that we probably yet have to invent the games that would make Virtual Reality compelling: looking at VR goggles as another controller for existing games with the same gameplays doesn't seem to be enough to me at this stage.

Blizzard is non stop with the addition of new Expansions. The only unfortunate aspect of them constantly coming out with new games is that communities and groups are already formed. WoW gamers have been with their communities for so long that they have almost become families.
Because of this- it is very unfortunate for GamerPeer.com because we want to take the idea of family/teamwork/friendships to every game, including console games. With that being said, if you are a WoWer and not in a tight group community to play with 24/7, try finding the right gamers using our free software. We will take the information you provide and match you with the right individuals and gamers that you can build a long term friendship with.

After the announcement last week about the Star Wars: The Old Republic super-secret space project, I wanted to jump up and down
The new expansion to SWTOR will finally bring Star Wars players to the... Stars. But don't expect too much from it: this is pvp only and pretty constrained - at least according to that Hoystiq article.

The Leap Motion controller looks more and more like a game controller. And it should. Cracking one application vertical before moving on to the next ones might be key to mainstream adoption.

I am not sure about everyone else, but TitanFall could be absolutely huge for the FPS of eSports. Of course Call of Duty will always be at the forefront, but what if Ghosts doesn't live up to standards? With the competitive COD community already up in arms- maybe TitanFall will be the "killer."

I've done a pretty fair amount of dungeon tanking and I agree that tanks don't seem to be too popular to play. Based on the comments made about other tanks, it seems that some are clueless.
I always tried to listen and learn and make it fun (for me, anyway,) and got a few compliments. I need to get back into it, but time seems tight these days.

If you missed Apple's WWDC keynote, you should watch this. A company called Anki is taking AI not only to the next level but also to the real world. Their first product due this fall is a car-racing game where you fight AI-controlled cars on a real track.
This is fascinating to me because the big recent trend in gaming has been to downplay the importance of AI by bringing human players to play with or against one another. We also talk a lot about real-life gaming (humans with humans in the street) but I don't know if this will be that massive (still waiting to see Ingress get big). Now this is the missing combination: after human + AI, human + human online, human + human real-life, real-life + AI.
Too early to tell but great to see the gaming industry has perspective beyond reinventing the nth iteration of a point and shoot.
Next gen gaming is reintroduced to the living room. My initial reaction is - when do the tournaments begin? The combination of gameing and real objects is #gamification at it's finest.

The video-game industry would be better off if more companies were brave (and financially secure) enough to do what Blizzard did.
Yes, says Adam Biessener on GameInformer. Of course late and good is better than now and crap. But is Titan's delay the sign Blizzard made the right call (for quality) or is the sign the company became too big and is lacking the creativity it needs to reinvent itself?

All it takes is a finger swipe and a few taps of the touchscreen, and the cyber attack is ready to launch.
This is both fascinating and scary. While it's been said before that gaming could change the world, I don't think that's what Jane McGonigal meant by making the world better through it. Darpa, the technology lab of the Pentagon, plans on using gaming interfaces and mechanics to make cyberwar much easier.
“Say you’re playing World of Warcraft, and you’ve got this type of sword, +5 or whatever. You don’t necessarily know what spells were used to create that sword, right? You just know it has these attributes and it helps you in this way. It’s the same type of concept. You don’t need the technical details,” said to Wired Dan Roelker - the man behind the idea for this Plan X project.
While this certainly makes sense from a pure military point of view, this raises many questions. While most military technology progress has been comlex to implement and costly, this is about making it easy and accessible to non-specialists. Not sure what happens next when the technology is leaked and everyone WoW player can become a cyber pirate...
When I read things like this I can't help but think that technology is actually starting to catch up to our imagination... we are essentially getting to a place where if you dream it, you can make it a reality.

Many hardcore and old school World of Warcraft players will tell you that many adventurers in Azeroth today have it easy compared to back in the day of vanilla and The Burning Crusade.
I agree: this is the expansion that made me quit WoW. Not so much because it was a total failure but because it didn't bring much novelty and probably focused too much on making it easy for newbies to onboard. Interesting community management / customer targeting lesson here.

Microsoft's Surface Pro can easily run AAA video games like League of Legends, Diablo 3, and Portal 2. So why isn't Redmond going out of their way to evangelize this fact?
Picture: Valve's Portal 2 running on Surface Pro with near-maximum graphics settings
Hadn't realize this myself. Probably won't make me switch from my iPad and Mac but interesting as it could open up a new market for Microsoft as I commented earlier here.
I believe that with the marketing industry is moving towards thin, small and elegant systems with the ability to play high performance games, this could be a very intresting development.

Blizzard has a history of using World of Warcraft as a fundraiser for disaster relief, and it broke its own recent records by raising $2.3 million for the American Red Cross to help victimes of Hurricane Sandy.
Impressive. Who said gamers were selfish nerds? ;-)

We could indeed ask whether online gaming isn't augmented reality's future. I'm not an expert with AR but it seems to me this promising technology is taking time to find massive scale applications. Not unlike voice recognition. Maybe gaming is the way to make it finally happen?
This article looks at the google glasses and the possiblity of creating an Augmented reality where you can turn ANY real life environment into a 'battlefield' for first person shooting games just by wearing the glasses.
I think the fun factor of being able to turn any environment you want into a 'map' to game on and then play a first person shooter in it could definetly make this extremely successful. This could definately be the future and next level of gaming.
Although this new way of gaming could be extremely fun it may not be appealing to all gamers and/or porffesional and competitive gamers who prefer to be inside in a relaxed position instead of having to be physically active for long periods of time while they game.
This could be an issue as to how succesfull and widespread this new form of gaming will be with a lot of people not wanting to have to be physically active while they game. This could hinder the success however there could still and probably will be a huge market for this type of gaming with how immersive and interactive it is.
Theres also huge possibilities with advertising with this sort of gaming aswell.

Games are often when breakthrough innovations are happening. This time, the company behind the awesome Anki Drive toy cars says they have solved fundamental robotics issues.
Wonder what they're up to next.
