Debugging Your Custom IIS Transform Manager Task

Debugging Your Custom IIS Transform Manager Task | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

During an initialization phase, the ITask interface provides your custom task with injected dependent objects, see here for more details on these objects. One challenge while writing a custom ITask implementation is debugging your task with real-time injected values. One approach is to have your debugger launch a finished or failed job in a similar environment as the IIS Transform Manager would.

Here are the high level tasks to achieve this:

- Run and locate a job instance

- Identify the program and arguments to execute

- Setup the working environment

- Run the command under your debugger

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry?

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
As summer draws to a close and we are all geared up for IBC 2011, a renewed focus on technical and commercial standards has emerged. While non-proprietary security standards may seem counter-intuitive (how can an open standard provide the right level of security to deliver high value content?), there are multiple benefits and clear value associated with a multi-vendor DRM scheme. These benefits have no doubt been amplified by recent progress on the fronts of multiple standards – plus the dramatically expanding landscape of multiple screens ideal for consuming video content.

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
At Streaming Media West 2010 last November, Microsoft launched IIS Media Services 4.0. This HTTP-based media server stack plugs into Internet Information Services (IIS), the web server built into Windows. Unlike traditional streaming servers, IIS Media Services scales out using any HTTP caching server, rather than requiring specific downstream streaming media servers. Today, Microsoft announced it is releasing the beta of a new IIS extension we previously discussed called IIS Transform Manager.

IIS Media Services extensions effectively turn IIS into a media origin server, but because IIS Smooth Streaming can use either IIS caching servers or any other standard HTTP caching servers downstream to scale (rather than requiring specific downstream streaming servers, as traditional streaming servers such as FMS or WMS typically do), the scale-out is not at all locked to any one server solution.

Microsoft sees Transform Manager as an integral part of an Expression Encoder 4 Pro encoding workflow in three areas: converting existing content libraries to other formats, such as Smooth Streaming; constant ingest/ transcode; and converting fragmented MP4 files to Apple HTTP Live Streaming segments for on-demand content delivery.

Microsoft Silverlight Turns 5 (But Will there Be a 6?)

Microsoft Silverlight Turns 5 (But Will there Be a 6?) | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Microsoft launches Silverlight 5, keeping a promise for GPU decoding and equality for browser-based applications.

Given the added functionality and lengthy formalized support cycle that Microsoft announced at the time of Silverlight 5's launch - the company says it will support the tool until late 2021 - the same pundits might want to take a second look.

First, let's look at the functionality. Microsoft announced two key features of Silverlight 5: graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration for H.264 decoding and the ability for Silverlight to make a direct call to the kernel of the host operating system.

Streaming Video Technologies Panorama, part 2 : Server-Side Stream Repackaging

Streaming Video Technologies Panorama, part 2 : Server-Side Stream Repackaging | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
There are basically two ways to sustain the extensive growth of video formats that you must, as a media distributor, serve to your different clients’ target devices : the most common answer is to choose the best in breed most-powerful encoders to prepare all the target formats during the content preparation time (see Panorama article N°1 on this topic), but you can adopt a different approach saying that you want to prepare your contents once and have the distribution part of the overall workflow take care of the repackaging and protection of the contents on the fly.

Server-side repackaging of the streams consists eventually in :
- choosing languages in audio and subtitle tracks available in the original mux (optional)
- transcoding/transrating the video content in different sizes/bitrates from a high quality video file (optional)
- applying a DRM compatible with the output format (optional)
- generating the manifest file corresponding to the target adaptive streaming technology (mandatory)
- remuxing and chunking the video data according to the output protocol requirements (mandatory)

Historically, repackaging was pushed as a quick solution for broadcasters to add iOS streams on top of existing Smooth or Flash streams. In a wider OTT/Adaptive Bitrate perspective, this alternative approach means : less files to manage in the main production workflow, less storage, less bandwidth to populate the origin servers, smaller time to contents’ online availability and easier support for new formats – shortly said, an agile path.

Potentially a risky one, but quite attractive…

Let's examine the available options on the market, to do it on your own platform or in the cloud !
