This issue explores how interior design is moving beyond aesthetics toward a deeper purpose: supporting human biology, resilience, and wellbeing. Light, air, sound, temperature, and materials are no longer merely design decisions— they are environmental signals the body responds to, with physiological consequences.

Energy-efficient buildings require efficient ventilation to achieve low-energy demand while maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) and comfort. This study analyses the impact of different ventilation systems (i.e., automated window ventilation, extract air system and mechanical ventilation with heat and enthalpy recovery) on heating and electricity demand, IAQ and thermal comfort. Multi-zone dynamic simulations are conducted and benchmarked against monitoring data from similar flats in Innsbruck for the mechanical ventilation with heat recovery case.

The recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), Directive (EU) 2024/1275, marks an important shift towards a more integrated approach to building performance. It requires Member States to establish regular inspections of ventilation systems. The ventilation system sizing and its ability to optimise performance under typical operating conditions shall be explicitly included in the inspection.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is widely seen as a key enabler for energy-efficient buildings, yet its potential for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems is far from fully exploited. Information created during design is often lost on the way to operation, data exchange between software tools remains fragmented, and building services are rarely described in a way that supports automated planning, commissioning or fault detection.

The weather files engineers use to design buildings are built from decades of historical measurements. The data can be more than 30 years old. But a building designed today is expected to perform well in 2080, and ideally beyond. Researchers from Norway and Portugal have now released future meteorological data covering more than 5,000 European locations. The files are reliable projections of Europe's future climate, down to specific time periods and places. The entire dataset is freely available at climatedataforbuildings.eu.

The Global Indoor Air Quality Policy Database is the first comprehensive repository of country-level indoor air quality policies, along with an assessment of each country's indoor air governance system. The database captures 271 IAQ policies across 54 countries. We encourage policymakers, government agencies, researchers, and advocates to use this open-source database to advance healthy indoor air action in their own jurisdictions. We welcome and encourage input from the community on version 1 of this database as we expand coverage to include more countries with indoor air quality policies.
