What IAQ Pilot Results Could Unlock Across Europe and Beyond We breathe approximately 10,000 to 12,000 litres of air every day, and for most people in Europe, over 90 percent of that air is inhaled indoors. Yet this air can contain a complex mixture of pollutants, including particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and biological contaminants, all of which are associated with significant health risks, particularly for children.

Heat recovery in ventilation units in buildings represents a significant energy savings potential, while it is sometimes overlooked compared to other energy efficiency actions for buildings (e.g. heating systems and building insulation). This potential is however clearly identified by stakeholders who ranked this action type among the priority actions to be investigated in streamSAVE Plus.

The role of high-energy-performance buildings is becoming established as a strategic pillar in the decarbonisation of the European energy system, particularly in a context of increasing electrification and rising cooling demand. Improving the thermal envelope of buildings not only reduces energy consumption associated with heating and cooling, but also alleviates pressure on electricity networks and contributes to stabilising the energy system.
