Scopri San Benedetto del Tronto e organizza una salutare visita a piedi | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Urbania, the ancient Casteldurante

Urbania, the ancient Casteldurante | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Urbania is a pretty medieval town in Le Marche where you can experience Italian life in a friendly "provincia"atmosphere. Although the ancient Casteldurate is an hilltop town is mostly flat, making it pleasant for walking especially because all the attractions are all within walking distance of one another. What to see.

Urbania's Ducal Palace, once the summer residence of the Duke of Urbino, now houses the Civic Museum, library, and art gallery. As you walk through the palace you'll see historical ceramics, paintings, engravings, and a globe and map collection. Urbania's mummies cemetery in the Chiesa dei Morti or Church of the Dead has 18 naturally mummified corpses on display. Read more about the Urbania Mummies Cemetery Museo Diocensano, the former Bishop's residence, displays ceramics and paintings from the 1300's to 1900's. There is a labyrinth of caves under the historical centre of Camerano excavated in the sandstone. Recent explorations and in-depth study and the finds discovered in opening routes opened for tourists led to the discovery however of architectural and bas-relief decorations which have very little to do with mere sandstone caves or storerooms: dome and vault shaped ceilings, circular chambers and columns with architectural details, decorations with friezes, ornaments and religious symbols were found throughout the caves. Art Hotel BB Le Marche: Palazzo Pascali, Comunanza AP | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Palazzo Pascali is located in the historic centre of Comunanza and is named after the homonymous noble family I Pascali, crusaders who came back to Europe from Jerusalem in 1300, landing in Ancona, important papal seaport; they consequently stayed in Le Marche, as they received lands and properties as reward and recognition for their services in the Holy Land. I Pascali chose as armorial bearings the Agnus Dei "Victimae paschali laudes" and prospered in the Piceno for more than 500 years.
Palazzo Pascali was sold in the postwar period and it has been recently bought by one of the descendants of the noble famil that has personally inspired its demanding renovation. The old and elegant property has now regained its original charm; it has been restored with extremely good taste and resect for the lines and details...

Ostra Vetere is a town and comune in the region of Marche, Italy, near the modern Ostra, south-east of Senigallia.
The original name of the town was Montenovo. In 1882 the name was changed in Ostra Vetere, after the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ostra, located near the modern town along the river Misa.

Here a frank guide to towns, sights and where to eat, drink and shop, with advice on how not to end up disappointed, fed up and frustrated.

A post from the past: the hidden haven of St Eustachio

A post from the past: the hidden haven of St Eustachio | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

In the Valle dei Grilli to the west of the beautiful medieval town of San Severino (in Le Marche's Macerata province) there is is a huge cavern that opens into the side of the sheer rock face dates back milennia, and you can see the score marks on the rocks from the chiselling work of the stone cutters.
There are several other smaller caverns in the area that likely served as quarries, but the largest of them is the only one that boasts a Romanesque church at its entrance. It's called the Gallo quarry, after a rooster that was thrown into a hole to try and find two lost monks - it (the rooster) eventually came out at a spring near Camerino, some 20km away. The monks? There's no account of what happened to them. Although not quite as old as the quarry, the church at the quarry's entrance dates back almost 1,000 years, and covered a far larger area than its crumbling remains now hold on to. At one time an important Benedictine abbey, St. Eustachio in Domora started out life in Lombard times as St. Michael, and over the centuries served as a guest house on this important connection road between San Severino (in the Potenza valley) and Camerino (in the Chienti valley).
Inside the main structure with its large round eye for the rose window is a shrine of sorts in Gothic style, and underneath one can still see the cells which most likely served as living quarters. The “prodigious crucifix” from the abbey is now in the San Lorenzo Abbey in San Severino.... click on the photo

Mysterious Places - Osimo: an incredible underground town

Mysterious Places - Osimo: an incredible underground town | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Under the city of Osimo (province of Ancona, Le Marche, Italy) there is an incredible dark second mate.
An underworld which links the main buildings, expanding throughout the city in a maze

This place, full of ancient alchemical symbolism, of which has not yet been given an explanation about its creation and on the respective function, was certainly sailed and lived by the Knights Templar of Malta who used it for their initiation to the Order.
After all, the symbolism of the labyrinth has always been considered the main element for the journey into the darkness of primal chaos toward the light, from a mere mortal and confused soul to an immortal and “enlightened” one. No coincidence that the path was done in an underground place...

Visit the province of Macerata through the historic postcards

Visit the province of Macerata through the historic postcards | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

The database focuses on early postcards of the Macerata Province."Cartoline Macerata" shows them, who produced them and where, how they were used, their significance, in short, their historical context. Hopefully, this site will prove that postcards are indeed a tremendous visual resource to analize the architectural changings in towns, landscapes, costumes.
The Project was created under the patronage of the Fondazione Carima.
The database primarily aims at being a reference and research instrument for scholars and students of the period. This is a virtual library for a type of material not previously studied at scientific level. (Especially when from early 20th century, postcards are rarely found in public collections.) As a work in permanent progress, the database will be updated and enriched as research progresses.

Urbino: A secret Italian hilltop town | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it
Urbino is up a very steep hill, lined with ancient stone houses and tall towers. Wonderful buildings surround the piazza, no loud ads to be seen.

Central Italy has three provinces: Tuscany and Umbria are well-known, Le Marche less so. Each has a hilltop town listed among UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. Tuscany has San Gimignano, Umbria has Assisi, and Le Marche has Urbino. Its remarkable legacy of independent Renaissance culture is the reason for inclusion on the list.

San Gimignano and Assisi are indisputably beautiful. They’re also busy. Especially on lovely summer days.

Monte Sibilla (a mountain) was once home, according to legend, to a witch or ’sybil’, giving rise to the name Sibillini. Menacing place names abound, such as Gole dell’Infernaccio (mouth of hell) and Passo Cattivo (bad pass). The area is famous throughout Italy for its legends, and even the park symbol depicts the mountains with eyes.
