Have You Heard of Ascoli Piceno? A "Secret" Spot In Italy

Have You Heard of Ascoli Piceno? A "Secret" Spot In Italy | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Could Ascoli Piceno be Italy's best kept secret? While gaggles of visitors flock to Rome and Tuscany, only a savvy few have explored Ascoli Piceno in the Le Marche region. In fact, the NY Times actually deemed Ascoli Piceno "the new Tuscany." I was recently invited to attend a get-to-know Ascoli Piceno event at the International Culinary Center in NYC and I am very intrigued by this town of towers (more than 50) just 2 hours from Rome that offers beaches, mountains, fine food & wine, and so much more. If you are visiting Italy, here are a few reasons to add Ascoli Piceno to your itinerary.

Location: Italy's Le Marche region is bordered on the east by the Adriatic Sea and Ascoli Piceno is the southernmost province. Ascoli Piceno has a population of about 60,000 people...

Leggi tutto

Archeology in Le Marche: The Sirolo Picene Princess Grave

Archeology in Le Marche: The Sirolo Picene Princess Grave | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

In Sirolo you will find an interesting archeological area at Pini place. This area is very important because it is the only one in Marche in which is possible visiting a sector of Picene Necropolis.

In 1989, in this archeological area it has been found out the “Sirolo Princesse Grave”, a funerary complex belonging to a Picene noble lady buried with a sumptuous set including also two chariots, referable to the Vi century b. C.

The two found chariots are of different typologies: a biga and a gig; as for other similar finds of central Adriatic Italy, they were disassembled and positioned in the sepulchre grave. This was a typical procedure of the Picene community funeral rites of the close Numana...

Located on the central Adriatic coast and perfectly situated for travelling to Croatia, the Porto San Giorgio Marina is designed to offer boating enthusiasts the pleasure of cutting-edge berthing and provides a unique boating experience in complete comfort and safety.
The port layout and the orientation of the entrance (North/North-West) allow the safe entry and exit of boats even in adverse weather conditions. In particular, the layout of the port entrance is designed on mathematical models to substantially reduce wave motion and make transit more comfortable. The distance between the piers allows easy manoeuvring on approach.
The cleanliness of the water in the inner basin of the Marina is ensured by three independent water exchange stations. A complete water exchange takes 18 hours.
The Marina has been a European Community Blue Flag holder since 1987 for the quality of its services and facilities and for the bathing quality of the surrounding waters. Click for More

Rococo in Le Marche: Galleria degli Stucchi - Palazzo Pianetti, Jesi

Rococo in Le Marche: Galleria degli Stucchi - Palazzo Pianetti, Jesi | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

The Palazzo Pianetti or Pianetti Tesei is a Rococo palace in the town of Jesi, Italy. Presently, it is owned by the town, and the palace and its adjacent building are used as a museum and exhibition site.
The Palace as now seen, was built in 1730, based on designs of Cardolo Maria Pianetti. The elaborate interior decorations with stucco and paint depict a variety of subjects and cycles. They include frescoes on stories of the Aeneid by Placido Lazzarini, the second floor stanza was decorated by the Florentine Bandinelli.

Cast your eyes, almost to the point of disorientation, along the 70-metres of the Galleria degli Stucchi. Take respite in the octagonal room that completes the optical illusion, be deceived by the many trompe l’oeil scattered throughout the other rooms.

The adjacent building houses the civic picture gallery or Pinacoteca Civica.
The most important works in the collection is a group of works by Lorenzo Lotto, completed 1512-1535 for the churches of S. Francesco al Monte and S. Floriano; these include the large altar-piece of the Deposition (1512); The Madonna of the Roses (1526), the three predellas of the altarpiece of St. Lucy, telling the story of her martyrdom (1532); and the Visitation (1531-35).

Le Marche Insiders Travel Stories: Ascoli Piceno Story II | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

….. Not only is most of this enchanting town traffic-free, but much of it has not changed for centuries. For example, to the south of Via dei Soderini and to the west of Via delle Torri is a whole mass of narrow cobbled streets whose medieval fabric and spirit are almost perfectly intact. Nearby, the Palazzetto dei Longobardi is as near as you can get to an untouched medieval town house; whilst the blocks of travertine stone on the 35-metre high Torre degli Ercolani beside it are so fresh they could have been cut yesterday...

Monte San Martino uno scrigno d'Arte

Monte San Martino uno scrigno d'Arte | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Another post from the past: Le Grotte di Santa Sperandia and La Roccaccia

Another post from the past: Le Grotte di Santa Sperandia and La Roccaccia | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

The cave on the northern slopes of Monte Acuto must have been difficult to see in the 13th century and even harder to get to. Carved out of the mountain's precipitous cliffs, it sits above the the rugged valley of the Laque river just a few kilometres from Cingoli. Today one can clamber down the steep slope on sets of wooden and travertine steps to the place of stone and solitude where Santa Sperandia spent so many years of Benedictine penitence. Just getting down there in the 1200s must have been an ordeal, never mind how one might survive in such an environment. More than a mere visionary, she was also renowned for her ability to perform miracles, and is best known for her act of producing fresh cherries to some hungry labourers one cold and snowy January. She died in 1276, and her incorrupt body now lies in state in the Sanctuary dedicated to her in Cingoli, where she is the town's patron saint. On the edge of the mountain ridge are the ruins of the 13th century La Roccaccia. Only a few crumbling walls remain, but the surrounding area is littered with the stones of the one-time important medieval fortress...

Le marche rich land for religious tourism: Blessed Antony of Amandola

Le marche rich land for religious tourism: Blessed Antony of Amandola | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Anthony was born in Amandola in the Marche Region and, attracted by the reputation of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, he entered the Augustinian Order and distinguished himself for his humility, spirit of obedience, and mortification, as well as his apostolic zeal. Around the year 1385 he was assigned to the monastery at Tolentino where he served as sacristan in the church of his beloved Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. In 1397 he went to southern Italy, possibly to undertake the preaching ministry. In 1400 he returned to Amandola where, through his initiative, the new Augustinian monastery with its adjoining church dedicated to Saint Augustine was constructed. After his death the church was renamed in Anthony's memory.

Anthony has been venerated ever since his death at Amandola on 25 January 1450. It is recorded in the municipal acts of the city that, as early as 1460, the anniversary of his death was observed as a feast and not a work day. His incorrupt body is exposed for public veneration by the faithful in the church of Saint Augustine in Amandola.

Mondavio, Le Marche by Fran Atopos

Mondavio, Le Marche by Fran Atopos | Vacanza In Italia - Vakantie In Italie - Holiday In Italy | Scoop.it

Mondavio’s castle is preserved very well, and it also contains a wax museum, where late medieval scenes are reproduced in a perfect setting. We are again in the area of Machiavelli’s “The prince”, not far from Montefeltro, the region of Urbino, where Raphael was born. Mondavio is a perfect location, as it is equally distant to the sea and to the mountains, just across Ancona’s province. In 1462 this place saw its greatest battle, between the Malatesta family, ruling over the coastline between today’s Marche and Emilia-Romagna, and the Vatican-backed Montefeltro family from Urbino, which controlled an area across Marche and Umbria. The Vatican won, and Mondavio was given to the Della Rovere family, which had connected with the Montefeltro, whose Guidobaldo was however attacked by “Il Valentino”, Machiavelli’s infamous “prince”. With the end of the Della Rovere dynasty, Mondavio became officially under the jurisdiction of the Vatican, which kept it so until the unity of Italy.
