British white people set to become a minority in Birmingham, says report - Birmingham Live

British white people set to become a minority in Birmingham, says report - Birmingham Live | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
British white people are soon to become the minority in Birmingham while nearly 50,000 residents in the city cannot speak English, according to a new report.

There are thought to be residents from nearly 200 countries living in Birmingham which has been described as 'super diverse' in the city council's new cohesion strategy.

But while there are recognised benefits to a multi-cultural society such as trade links, the city's varied ethnicity has also been identified as major factor in social segregation and community 'tension'.
UK Data Service's insight:

This article and the local government research it is based on take a view of the future ethnic make-up of Birmingham, extrapolating from data in the 2011 UK Census, part of the UK Data Service collection.

Fate of Bantham at centre of planning blueprint battle - Devon Live

Fate of Bantham at centre of planning blueprint battle - Devon Live | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
A South Devon parish is set to follow a series of Cornish communities in cracking down on second homes.

Residents vote on Thursday in a referendum on the Bantham, Buckland and Thurlestone neighbourhood plan, which will help to shape the future of housing, leisure amenities and business activities.

The debate has been dominated by a row over the future of Bantham. The idyllic beach village with 40 homes, a pub and a shop and surrounding 728-acre estate was bought for £11.5 million in 2014 by the Old Etonian Nicholas Johnston.

When the neighbourhood plan process was launched, Mr Johnston submitted proposals including an underground car park, new open market housing, a boat building/restoration yard and eight family rented homes.

Water, energy and bus companies will not be forced to provide services in Welsh after plans were put on hold.

Public bodies like councils and police have to provide some services bilingually under Welsh language standards - or face fines.

But campaigners said it was a "major step backwards".

Ode to whiteness: British poetry scene fails diversity test | Books | The Guardian

Ode to whiteness: British poetry scene fails diversity test | Books | The Guardian | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
The British poetry world is “failing to meet even the most basic measurements of inclusivity”, according to a new report which highlights the “systemic exclusion” of poets and critics of colour from UK and Irish poetry magazines.

Collecting data from 29 magazines and websites including PN Review, Poetry Review, the Guardian and Oxford Poetry, the study found that between 2012 and 2018, 9% of almost 20,000 published poems were by poets of colour. Of the 1,819 poems, 502 were published in a single magazine, Modern Poetry in Translation; if this is taken out of the equation, only 7% of poems were by poets of colour. The studyPDF, conducted by poetry reviewer and blogger Dave Coates for Ledbury Emerging Poetry Critics, points out that in contrast, at the 2011 census, 12.9% of the UK population identified as black and minority ethnic (BME).
