In a six-screen video installation at the heart of the National Gallery this winter, Black Londoners play clapping games and trek through an ice-white Norwegian landscape. They’re dressed stylishly, but for an urban environment. ‘In Search of the Miraculous’ is accompanied by five reappropriations of famous Romantic paintings, in which the central European figures have been replaced with contemporary Black protagonists. Blurbs and interviews explain that the artist, Kehinde Wiley, sees the piece as an exploration of European Romanticism and our relationship with nature, climate change, migration, empire and, most importantly, race and what it means to be seen.

Scots pensioners set to lose thousands of pounds due to Tory suspension of Triple Lock

Scots pensioners set to lose thousands of pounds due to Tory suspension of Triple Lock | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Almost one million pensioners in Scotland will lose out financially as a result of the UK Government's decision to suspend the Triple Lock, official figures show.

The Tories confirmed last year the measure would be shelved temporarily and pensions will instead rise by 2.5 per cent.

It followed concerns by ministers that a big post-pandemic rise in average earnings would have meant pensions increasing by eight per cent.

More than half of black children in the UK are now growing up in poverty, a new analysis of official data has revealed.

Black children are also now more than twice as likely to be growing up poor as white children, according to the Labour party research, which was based on government figures for households that have a “relative low income” – defined as being below 60% of the median, the standard definition for poverty.

SNP councillors condemn UK Government ‘triple lock’ pension suspension

SNP councillors condemn UK Government ‘triple lock’ pension suspension | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Two Renfrewshire councillors have condemned the UK Governments decision to suspend the pension ‘triple lock’, the formula which determines annual state pension increases.

The UK Government, earlier this month, confirmed a one-year suspension of the ‘triple lock’.

The state pension is supposed to increase each year in line with whichever of the following three things is highest: inflation, average wage increase or 2.5 percent but during the Covid pandemic people were earning less than usual. This was because a large amount of people were placed on furlough.

One in five - or some 1.25million - women are living in poverty and progress in relieving hardship in old age has gone into reverse, a new study reveals.

Fewer retired men struggle financially in old age, but one in six, or around 860,000, are also badly off.

Age UK released a report on poverty in old age - defined as having an income below 60 per cent of typical household income - as MPs were due to debate the controversial suspension of the state pension triple lock today.

North-east MP calls for pensions cut plans to be halted

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has warned that Prime Minister Boris Johnson must not break his manifesto commitment by cutting the triple lock on pensions.

It follows reports that the Treasury is drawing up plans to break the triple lock and cut the planned increase in pensions to below the increase in average earnings.

Mr Thomson highlighted the UK already has the lowest state pension of any country in north-west Europe by comparison to pre-retirement wages, and that pensioner poverty has risen further after a decade of austerity cuts.

Pay for nurses and other NHS staff in England will have fallen in real terms by more than 7% since 2010, even if they accept the latest offer from the government, according to new analysis that will fuel rising anger about public sector pay deals.

Figures produced by the TUC show that remuneration for nurses, community nurses, medical secretaries, speech therapists, physiotherapists, paramedics and radiographers will have dropped by between 7.3% and 7.6% in real terms in just over a decade, even after factoring in the 3% rise offered last week.

Future Covid inquiry urged to focus on links to poverty

Future Covid inquiry urged to focus on links to poverty | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Any public inquiry into Covid-19 must examine the impact of the UK’s high poverty levels going into the pandemic on its health and economic impacts, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has demanded.

The call comes as newly released Government data shows a rise in child poverty and pensioner poverty prior to the pandemic.

Some 14.5 million people were trapped in poverty in 2019/20, including 4.3 million children, 8.1 million working-age adults and 2.1 million pensioners, according to the Department for Work and Pensions’ Households below average income (HBAI) statistics.

It also found that poverty among children and pensioners has been on a rising trend for the six years prior to Covid-19.

New analysis from JRF finds that, even after the deferral scheme for energy bills and council tax discount announced today are taken into account, once the new energy price cap kicks in:

Families on low incomes will spend on average 16% of their incomes after housing costs on energy bills. This compares to 5% for middle-income families
Single adult households on low incomes will spend a shocking 43% on average of their income after housing costs on energy bills
Lone parent families on low incomes will spend 22% on average of their income after housing costs on energy bills
Some families on low incomes will face annual bills as high as £2,326 from April
For low-income families with children, the measures will mitigate just 36% of the increase in their bills on average. This compares to 59% for low-income single-adult households.
Around three-quarters of people eligible for the council tax discount announced today are not in poverty

THE Tories have been accused of "hammering" Scottish pensioners after new analysis showed the UK Budget is set to see pensioners lose out on thousands of pounds.

Analysis from former UK pensions minister Sir Steve Webb shows pensioners will lose £520 next year, and a cumulative £2600 over the next five years, as a result of Chancellor Rishi Sunak's decision to scrap the Triple Lock for state pensions.

With the OBR forecasting inflation will rise by over 4%, it means millions of pensioners could end up with a real terms cut in their state pension next year.

Families with children under five face ‘steep rises’ in poverty, warns research

Families with children under five face ‘steep rises’ in poverty, warns research | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Based a hundred research studies and other sources, the review examines patterns in poverty for young children. It reveals that while child poverty rates have fluctuated since 2000, there has been a sustained increase since 2013/14, with families with at least one child under five experiencing the steepest rise.

According to the evidence review, the rise in poverty is largely due to changes to the benefits system, including the two-child limit and the reduction of in-work support, reflecting the changing nature of work and family life, including the rise in insecure work and the growth of the private rental market.

What will happen when the furlough scheme ends?

What will happen when the furlough scheme ends? | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Why are we asking this now?

The UK government has begun the gradual process of winding up its Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, the furlough strategy that has seen the state prop up the economy and support businesses throughout the coronavirus pandemic by paying the lion’s share of employees’ wages in order to avert mass unemployment in lockdown.

The scheme has been in place since 20 March 2020 and had originally been scheduled to end on 31 October 2020 before the second wave of the virus struck last autumn.

In early 2021, unemployment, real earnings growth, arrears on household bills, and food-bank use were all at similar overall levels to pre-pandemic. This is an astonishing outcome given the scale of economic disruption and loss of national income over the last 15 months. It highlights the huge impact of the government’s interventions to support household incomes during the pandemic, including £20 per week uplift in Universal Credit and (especially) the furlough scheme.

But this masks groups who have seen clear increases in hardship – particularly the self-employed, people from ethnic minority groups, and families already in in-work poverty before the pandemic hit.

Poverty is not the same as food insecurity

Poverty is not the same as food insecurity | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
In a speech to the NASUWT teaching union on 3 April, shadow education secretary Kate Green claimed that 4.3 million children are living in poverty, and in families that struggle to “put food on the table”.

Although poverty is often linked to struggling to afford food, data collected by the government shows that these can be two distinct issues. Putting enough food on the table is a real struggle for many families, but not everyone classed as living in poverty also suffers from food insecurity.
