People living in the most deprived parts of Scotland are still most likely to report being teetotal, according to a report giving a snapshot of the nation’s health.
Almost a quarter of those from the poorest areas (24%) said they didn’t drink alcohol, compared to 12% in the most affluent areas.

The mental wellbeing of people in Scotland was lower last year than before the pandemic, falling to its lowest recorded level, according to research.
Average wellbeing for adults in 2021, measured using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), was 48.6 which was down from 49.8 in 2019.

A new study finds that moderate consumption of alcohol may reduce the risk of recurring cardiovascular events. It says people with cardiovascular disease who drink may experience a reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, angina, or death from cardiovascular causes if they consume 7–8 alcoholic drinks per week. People who consumed 6 ounces (oz) of alcohol per day lowered their risk by 50% compared to people with CVD who do not drink.

A recent study published in BMC Medicine found that light to moderate alcohol usage may be linked to reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, and death for individuals with heart disease.
Study details For the study, the authors analyzed data from the UK Biobank, the Health Survey for England (1994-2008), the Scottish Health Survey (1995, 1998, 2003), and 12 previously published studies. In total, the study included 48,423 patients—14,386 from UK Biobank; 2,802 patients from the two health surveys; and 31,235 patients from the previous studies.

The figures examined by members of the Health and Social Care Integration Joint Board on Friday revealed that the number of drug related deaths rose to 81 in 2019 compared to 64 the previous year.
The Scottish Health Survey data also reported that 84 per cent of adults in Fife report drinking alcohol, with approximately 71,000 adults in Fife consuming in excess of the recommended safe amount of 14 units per week.

Obesity Action Scotland (OAS) has called for a ban on the ‘incessant’ marketing of snacks high in fat, sugar or salt (HFSS) like cakes, biscuits, confectionery and savoury snacks as lockdown has sent the nation’s weight gain soaring. A Food Standards Scotland’s (FSS) study of the nation’s snacking behaviour between January and July 2020 revealed an increased penchant for snacks, especially those that are higher in calories and carbs.

A leading food charity has warned that new research calls into question Scotland’s ongoing ambition to be a Good Food Nation.
On Tuesday new figures were published as part of the Scottish Health Survey showing stark differences in people’s ability to put food on the table.
Data from between 2017 and 2019 shows Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and East Ayrshire are among the worst-affected areas, with around 14 per cent of people saying they worry about running out of food.

The data compiled by the SGF found that only 24% of the population agreed that access to the products or information about them, should be restricted. Moreover, almost half of the people surveyed were opposed to this – with 24% saying they “strongly disagreed” and a further 24% who said they “tended to disagree.” The group said that local policymakers and health experts need to consider these opinions in order to “ensure e-cigarettes are properly positioned to help Scotland meet its smoke-free target.”

Over recent years we have seen increasing rates of obesity and stubbornly high rates of smoking and harmful alcohol use. In time these could have a significant impact on life expectancy in Scotland, which has consistently risen since the 1950s but has stalled since 2012.
