Years of austerity and the end of a “golden age” of upward social mobility seen in later 20th century Britain may have been a major factor in the vote to Brexit, according to the authors of a major new report into social attitudes. The latest annual British Social Attitudes Survey found that 60 per cent of people in the UK now describe themselves as working class – the same level as in 1983 – and concludes that contrary to the claim of many, “we are clearly not all middle class now”.

Belgium's Justice Minister has been criticised after claiming the number of practicing Muslims would “very soon” overtake the number of practising Christians in Europe. Speaking in a question and answer session at a parliamentary committee, Koen Geens said: “In Europe, very shortly we’re going to have more practising Muslims than practising Christians.” His comments have been dismissed as “misleading and irresponsible” by one of the UK’s leading anti-Islamophobia charities.

The overwhelming majority of Britons wouldn’t feel comfortable letting a person with a mental health condition look after their children or marry into their family, new research on attitudes towards mental illness has found. The research suggests that despite recent strides in awareness about mental health issues, stigma continues to prevail. Analysis of the NatCen’s British Social Attitudes survey shows many Britons say they are still uncomfortable working with or socialising alongside people with depression or schizophrenia.

The majority of British people are happy and grateful to be in work and would still choose to have a job even it they did not need the money, according to research. About 62 per cent of people in the UK say they would like to be employed in a job they enjoyed rather than simply staying at home – despite also saying they were suffering from increased stress due to longer working hours. People also said they feel under more pressure than ever to perform in their jobs, and feel they have less job security than in the past.

As far as uncomfortable stats go, they are right up there. Research carried out for The Independent suggests that three-quarters of people who rely on working age benefits say they feel shame about claiming, either sometimes, most or all the time. Not only that, but two thirds of people in work agree that claimants should feel that way. It paints a picture of a pretty bleak outlook given that one of the founding aims of the Beveridge Report, which launched the modern welfare state, was to free social assistance from stigma.
