The adult pay gap between those born into wealthier families and those from less well-off parents is widening, according to new research. The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that in 2012 a 42-year-old man whose parents were among the richest fifth of households earned an average of 88 per cent more than those from the poorest families. The equivalent gap in 2000 was just 47 per cent.

Men from poor backgrounds are around twice as likely to be single than those from rich families by the time they reach early middle age, research has found. As well as being more likely to be in highly-paid jobs or even working at all, richer men in their early 40s in Britain are also more likely to be living with a partner, according to the findings from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). It found the likelihood of being in a relationship, and a partner’s level of earnings, are increasingly related to family background.

Large gaps in income and living standards between different ethnic groups persist in the UK, according to research. A typical Bangladeshi household brings in £8,900 less than the average White British household, whilst Pakistani households bring in £8,700 less. The Resolution Foundation think tank said households originating from a black African background earn 22 per cent less than the White British average.

First the Resolution Foundation says that inequality is rising. Then along comes the Institute for Fiscal Studies to argue, in a report commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, that it has fallen since 2008. What on earth are we to make of it all? It’s partly because the two organisations were looking at different things.
