Poor men twice as likely to be single in middle age, study says

Poor men twice as likely to be single in middle age, study says | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Men from poor backgrounds are around twice as likely to be single than those from rich families by the time they reach early middle age, research has found. As well as being more likely to be in highly-paid jobs or even working at all, richer men in their early 40s in Britain are also more likely to be living with a partner, according to the findings from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). It found the likelihood of being in a relationship, and a partner’s level of earnings, are increasingly related to family background.

Inequality has fallen, says IFS, but levels of grinding poverty are unchanged

Inequality has fallen, says IFS, but levels of grinding poverty are unchanged | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
First the Resolution Foundation says that inequality is rising. Then along comes the Institute for Fiscal Studies to argue, in a report commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, that it has fallen since 2008. What on earth are we to make of it all? It’s partly because the two organisations were looking at different things.
