Incomes of middle and low earners set to flatline for another three years, study finds

Incomes of middle and low earners set to flatline for another three years, study finds | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Incomes of low earners are set to stagnate for at least another three years, leading to record levels of inequality, a new study has found. While household incomes for richer people will begin to rise next year, those on middle and low incomes will not see an increase until at least 2020, the Resolution Foundation think tank said. It means income inequality is likely to rise for the first time since the 1980s and hit record highs during the early 2020s, having fallen in recent years. The Resolution Foundation said government benefit cuts were largely to blame.

Low and middle income households face three years of stagnating living standards lasting until 2020, according to the Resolution Foundation’s annual living standards report. The think tank reports that high inflation following the referendum has caused the return of falling real pay and deepened cuts to working age benefits, meaning typical household incomes are projected to have fallen marginally this financial year (2017-18).

Millennials spend a quarter of income on housing. How do we fix what Resolution calls Britain's housing catastrophe? | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
A 50 year drain on living standards, is the effect of what the Resolution Foundation describes as Britain’s “housing catastrophe”.  If you consider its figures you’ll see why “crisis”, an adjective stripped of much of its power by over use, no longer cuts the mustard.  The so called ‘Silent Generation’ that grew up prior to the Second World War (1926-1945) spent just 7 per cent of its income on housing at the age of 30.

The UK economy is 'broken' says major new report | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Britain’s economic model is “broken” and failing to generate rising prosperity for most of the UK population, according to a major new report. The IPPR’s Commission on Economic Justice argues in its interim publication that the UK economy requires a structural overhaul on the scale of the founding of the welfare state by Labour in the 1940s and the Thatcher rollback of the state in the 1980s.
