An Introduction to Translation Memory - MN

As companies are translating their documentation into more and more languages, translation budgets are increasing and the tasks of managing versions, ensuring consistency and overseeing quality have gotten more difficult. Technology comes to the rescue in the form of Translation Memory, a software tool used by linguists and translation agencies allowing the “re-use” of previously translated content. This re-use has obvious cost and time savings implications, while also greatly increasing consistency of translations. But it is not a magic bullet and there are techniques to maximize its benefits.

Méteteme: La posedición: ¿zombificación del traductor?

The trouble with translating

“Hashire!”

For the uninformed, that’s the command form of “Run!” in Japanese.

The point I’m trying to make is that a translator is an artist and documentarian, not a machine crunching equations to produce an exact replica of some original work. This seems especially hard for the Japanese to come to grips with. A rigid business culture that demands attention to detail combines with a (sometimes misplaced) pride in English skills and a persistent belief that Japanese is “too difficult” for foreigners to grasp to create a misunderstanding of what a translation should look like.

Free/open-source machine translation systems and tools

Here's a non-exhaustive list of links to existing free/open-source machine translation systems, which I will try to complete as I find about them. To the best of my knowledge, software listed here has:

either a free license as defined by the Free Software Foundation,
or an open-source license as defined by the Open Source Initiative.
