Série III - nº 3 - 2012 - Centro de Estudos Anglísticos da Universidade de LisboaNEW DIRECTIONS IN TRANSLATION Iberian Studies on Translation and InterpretingThis volume gathers contributions representing the main trends in translation and interpreting studies by authors in the Iberian peninsula, with a focus on the Iberian languages (Basque, Catalan, Portuguese/Galician and Spanish). The essays cover different methodologies and objects of analysis, including traditional textual and historical approaches as well as contemporary methods, such as cultural, sociological, cognitive and gender-oriented perspectives. This seemingly eclectic approach pivots around seven focal points that aim to reflect the most frequent research topics in the Iberian peninsula: (i) theoretical and methodological approaches; (ii) translation and interpreting training; (iii) historical perspectives; (iv) terminology; (v) rapidly evolving fields in the translation and interpreting industry, such as localization and public service interpreting; (vi) translation of literature; and (vii) translation studies journals. John Benjamins: Multilingual Corpora and Multilingual Corpus Analysis Edited by Thomas Schmidt and Kai WörnerThis volume deals with different aspects of the creation and use of multilingual corpora. The term 'multilingual corpus' is understood in a comprehensive sense, comprising any systematic collection of empirical language data enabling linguists to carry out analyses about multilingual individuals, multilingual societies or multilingual communication. The individual contributions are thus concerned with a variety of spoken and written corpora ranging from learner and attrition corpora, language contact corpora and interpreting corpora to comparable and parallel corpora. The overarching aim of the volume is, first: to take stock of the variety of existing multilingual corpora, documenting possible corpus designs and uses, second: to discuss methodological and technological challenges in the creation and analysis of multilingual corpora, and third: to provide examples of linguistic analyses that were carried out on the basis of multilingual corpora. Languages and the Military : Palgrave MacmillanFor the first time, this book explores the role of foreign languages in military alliances, in occupation and in peace building, through detailed case studies from Ireland, Britain, France, Finland, Slovenia, Korea, Bosnia and Cyprus, ranging from the eighteenth century until today. It adopts a multidisciplinary perspective, bringing together academic researchers and practitioners – from the military, and from the museum and interpreting worlds. The book raises key issues about communication, identity and representation in war, and argues that the complex linguistic dimensions of conflict and peace operations are of major relevance to military planners, civilian agencies, museums and the media. The event was the presentation and launch of the book If U Hie Se A De Prizin, Antoloji of Puem-Dem For Naija Langwej, held at Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja. The book is a collection of poems, all written in Nigerian pidgin by 32 poets and edited by Nigerian pidgin language promoter, Edwin Oribhabor. Speaking in an interview, Oribhabor noted that the essence of the work was to promote the writing and speaking of the language, and to bring it out in literary form. “What we want to achieve by this is to bring literary attention to pidgin. Pidgin should be used as a form of communication in the literary sense, not just speaking and finally, to standardise its way of spelling,” he said. |
