Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement is an informal agreement between Australia and New Zealand to allow for the free movement of citizens of one nation to the other.

The arrangement was announced on 4 February 1973 and came into effect soon after. Although the exact nature of the arrangement has been varied from time to time, it still allows citizens of Australia or New Zealand to live in each other's nation indefinitely and take on most employment. New Zealand citizens who are not also Australian citizens may not work in Australia in areas involving national security or in the federal public service.

Prior to 1973, neither New Zealand nor Australia exercised systematic control over immigration from the main Commonwealth nations (principally the United Kingdom and Canada), and New Zealanders and Australians were thus free to move between each country under informal arrangements.

Homeless Kiwis live under a Sydney bridge

Homeless Kiwis live under a Sydney bridge | Trans Tasman Migration | Scoop.it

Crossing the Ditch in search of the Aussie dream can quickly turn into a nightmare. Steve Kilgallon meets the homeless New Zealanders of Kiwi park.

It is encircled by homelessness support services, but they can't offer much help to New Zealanders, because Kiwis who arrived in Australia after February 2001 aren't eligible for the most basic of state benefits - unemployment, healthcare, and housing. So those who find their Australian dream has its flaws can become stuck on the streets.

$244m viaduct fails to allow for walkers - National - NZ Herald News

$244m viaduct fails to allow for walkers - National - NZ Herald News | Trans Tasman Migration | Scoop.it
Auckland's newest transport infrastructure - the replacement Newmarket Viaduct - has been completed for $244 million without a promised volcanic-themed walkway beneath it.
Peter Mellow's insight:

A massive FAIL for NZ. You only have to look at the walkways and cycle paths in any Australian city to see how far behind NZ is in providing supporting infrastructure for people who choose to not use a car, which should be encouraged to reduce congestion, as well as health and global reasons.
