Too often in education we think we know what is best for our students. Not often enough do we listen and hear what our students are saying about their education. This collection tries to show more of the student perspective.

The Web We Need to Give Students — Bright — Medium

The Web We Need to Give Students - Bright - Medium
“Giving students their own digital domain is a radical act. It gives them the ability to work on the Web and with the Web.”
By Audrey Watters

Student privacy has become one of the hottest issues in education, with some 170 bills proposed so far this year that would regulate it. These legislative efforts stress the need to protect students when they’re online, safeguarding their data from advertisers as well as from unscrupulous people and companies. There’s some pushback against these proposals too, with arguments that restrictions on data might hinder research or the development of learning analytics or data-driven educational software.

Research: Teachers Say Tech Distractions More Concerning than Privacy, Security -- Campus Technology

Most teachers in the United States are more worried about the potential for technology in the classroom to distract students than they are about privacy and security, according to a new survey from Instructure. Respondents also said, however, that they are optimistic about technology's potential to improve learning outcomes, increase access to education and boost the efficiency with which it's delivered.

Her new university is among a number of recent initiatives to change the way American students learn and the values they take away with them. Ivy League universities are now particularly keen to shake up their admission process and focus less on students with great grades and a set of extra-curricular activities, and prioritize meaningful experience instead.

Research: Game-Based Learning Can Help Nontraditional Student -- Campus Technology

Game-based learning should just be another tool in the belt, as far as educators in higher ed think, particularly useful for "learning moments" that can help students succeed, according to new research from Muzzy Lane. Likewise, game-based learning is no good if it's pricey and complex to develop; it needs to be inexpensive and "authorable" by the faculty members themselves. And don't forget, students say, to make the games mobile so they work on the same devices the students like to use.
