The Park Avenue Armory reopens its doors to another antique fair this past Thursday, November 8th. The show will end on Monday, November 12th. Salon Art + Design was created by veteran show producer Sanford Smith. It is the first American fair to collaborate with the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, Europe's most prestigious association of dealers. Most of the dealers were in attendance at the renowned Biennael des Antiquaires in Paris, this past September. Altogether the mix of genres, periods and styles reflected the eclecticism of today's collector.

While this show highlighted 20th century and contemporary art and design, historic design were represented by the oldest decorative arts gallery in Paris, an Old Master dealer with multiple European locations, and a selection of dealers in ethnographic and Asian material. Collectors in attendance welcomed, once again, the opportunity to pair a Brueghel with a Jean Michel Frank table or a tribal mask with a Le Corbusier painting. The range and caliber of material at the Salon will attract discerning collectors, designers, and art enthusiasts  around the world. Images courtesy High End Weekly™

2012 / Paris Salon: Dramatic. New York’s Upcoming Salon: Historic : Art & Design 20 | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

The Paris Salon is a known entity in elite circles. An historic benchmark of famous artists whose innovations were known to cause scandals, disrupt the Academy and usher in new movements of art and design.

Launched in 1725, it was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was held in the Palace de Louvre, with  as many as 5,318 (in 1887) paintings covering every inch of space on the walls.  Inclusion in The Salon was a highly competitive process, with members of the Academy the vetting committee. The vernissage  (varnishing) of opening night was a register of  your social status.  Its reviewers were the first art critics.  Its ancient catalogs still inform are art historians.

The Salon is the model for today’s art and design fairs, antique shows – at least the good ones whose vetting committees are strict and think nothing of pulling out works in any exhibitors booth if they do not meet certain criteria.

Interestingly, with art and design fairs being in a sort of limbo with younger audiences, there’s a new effort to revive the spirit of The Paris Salon.  It will be seen in the vernissage of The Salon: Art and Design Fair  the Park Avenue Armorys on Wednesday, November 7, which will benefit Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.  Heightening the experience for collectors and curators, buyers and browsers is the partnership the fair promoter, Sanford Smith, has forged with the venerable Syndicat National des Antiquaires.
With at least 24 French dealers making a New York appearance – many are here for the first time – and an equal number of extraordinary American and other International  dealers, The Salon holds great promise for everyone interested in the fine and decorative arts that span the late 19th through mid-20th Century.(...)

The Pavilion of Art and Design New York, the French design fair that launched a successful stateside edition last November, will not return to the Park Avenue Armory this year. In its place is a new, somewhat more focused fine art and design fair called the Salon of Art and Design, which will specialize in contemporary and 20th-century design. The fair will feature 53 dealers, many of whom participated in PAD, including New York’s Jason Jacques and Friedman Benda and Paris’s Galerie Vallois.

“We’ll have the highest quality of art and design there is, and it will be primarily 20th-century, with just a few dealers who specialize in earlier work,” said veteran fair organizer Sanford Smith, who co-produced PAD NY with Patrick Perrin, founder of the French edition. For his new venture, Smith will team up with the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, a Paris-based association of 400 antiques, art, and design dealers that organizes the respected Biennale des Antiquaires. The partners hopes to recruit new names, like Tel Aviv’s Le Minotaure Gallery, alongside established galleries from PAD NY's roster. (...)

How do artworks and furniture from the 16th century to the present get into museums? Most international survey museums were built upon the existing collections of aristocrats or the donations of wealthy patrons. But new acquisitions often go through art dealers, and an art fair like The Salon: Art + Design is the kind of place where you might see a few before they find institutional homes.

This is the first year for the Salon, organized jointly by Sanford L. Smith & Associates and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, Paris, an association of dealers in historical design (or what used to be called “antiques”). Thirty-one Syndicat dealers are included in this show of 53 exhibitors, many appearing in New York for the first time.

One of the most impressive inclusions is De Jonckheere Gallery, an old masters dealer from Geneva (until recently Paris) whose darkened booth includes spotlighted works like “The Harvest” (1621), by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, which is similar in its composition and observation of the seasons to “The Harvesters” (1565), by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, at the Metropolitan Museum. Also at De Jonckheere is a small panel by Lucas Cranach the Elder, “Portrait of the Elector of Saxony, Frederick III, Known as Frederick the Wise,” signed in 1532 with a serpent rather than Cranach’s name, and an extraordinary little painting on copper by Jan van Kessel (Breughel the Younger’s nephew) from 1659 that was made for a cabinet of curiosities and depicts insects, flowers and shells against a white ground...

A new art and design fair comes to the Armory this November

Mark your calendars: There’s a new fair in town, and this one has a decidedly French accent. “The Salon: Art & Design,” at the Park Avenue Armory, will bring a number of esteemed French and European dealers to New York, many of them exhibiting here for the first time. A partnership between France’s Syndicat Nationale des Antiquaires and fair organizer Sanford Smith, the Salon will feature furniture, modern and contemporary art, and Asian and ethnographic art, uniting dealers from both the U.S. and Europe in a high-quality, eclectic showcase. “The Salon will include some of the world’s most prestigious dealers, 20 of whom just participated in the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris,” says Christian Deydier, president of the Syndicat. “For a very long time, American collectors have traveled to Europe and established long-lasting relationships with dealers from the SNA, and a large number have also been visiting the Biennale over the years. We feel it’s nice for the SNA to come and meet these collectors in their own country, as well as to attract new ones.”

The SNA had been exploring the possibility for a while. Once the idea for the Salon was hatched, “a lot of our members very rapidly expressed their interest,” says Deydier. Among the notable European exhibitors are L’Arc en Seine, Galerie Berès, Galerie du Passage, Galerie Vallois, Galerie Gmurzynska, Modernity, Alain de Monbrison, and, of course, Christian Deydier. New York dealers include James Goodman, DJL Lalique, and Barry Friedman. “It will be interesting to see the dialogue that will take place between the American and the European dealers, all united by their love and passion for their work,” adds Deydier.

The fair kicks off with a preview night gala on November 7 to benefit the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, an organization that serves more than 12,000 disadvantaged New York youths with educational and physical education programs. The chair of the benefit committee is Jacques Grange, so it promises to be as stylish as it is worthy. Gala tickets start at $250 and daily admission is $20.

A new art show in NYC.

Like a chic, one-stop decorating shop, Sanford Smith and France's Syndicat National des Antiquaire's debut furniture and art show is bringing together hundreds of works from 53 international dealers — including many who have never before shown in the United States — that span style, era, and genre.

Recognizing today's demand for interior design that has a layered, collected look, the fair will feature modern works from 1890 through the present, along with ethnographic art. Booths at The Salon: Art + Design might pair, say, Art Deco chairs by Pierre Chareau with a contemporary painting by Max Ernst near modern Japanese stoneware.

Exhibitors include L’Arc en Seine-Paris, Barry Friedman/Friedman Benda-New York, and Modernity-Stockholm, with some spaces curated by top decorators, such as Patrick Hourcade.

The fair runs November 8-12 at the Park Avenue Armory, with a gala preview November 7 benefiting the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Daily admission is $20 ($10 with a student ID). For more information, visit thesalonny.com.
