Adolf Loos at Salon Art & Design

Adolf Loos at Salon Art & Design | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

One of the most fascinating exhibitors at the Salon Art & Design is Yves Macaux, whose gallery in Brussels specializes in early Viennese design and turn-of-the-century Belgium design. This time, he has a strong representation of furniture and objects by Adolf Loos, the Viennese architect who is mostly known for his essay "Ornament and Crime," and who was inspired by English design culture, when promoting his campaign against what he perceived as "trendy" Viennese design.

Sitting pretty at the salon: art + design » | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

by Richard Rabel, interior designer and art advisor
I’ve been on the lookout for interesting chairs for a new project in New York and my timing could not be better with the last of the year’s major art fairs in New York opening last night.  The Salon Art + Design which principally showcases work from the 20th and 21st century (totally my thing!), is one of the most interesting fairs on this side of the pond since many of the exhibiting dealers are from Continental Europe and rarely exhibit in the USA outside of this Fair.

So between the ooh lalala’s and the “c’est magnifiques” and plenty of air kisses, these are some of the chairs that caught my eye:

Galerie L’Arc en Seine had this par of splendid Pierre Chareau fauteuils from 1938  (image above).  Can’t get enough of their nod to Cubism with their angular geometric form. (...)

‘The Salon: Art & Design,’ a Wide Range at Park Avenue Armory

‘The Salon: Art & Design,’ a Wide Range at Park Avenue Armory | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

by Roberta Smith
The Salon: Art & Design,” the smart young fair at the Park Avenue Armory this weekend, is doing an excellent job of splitting the difference between the auction-house randomness and white-cube-gallery control. As its title suggests, it is wide open in terms of material — art, craft, design, antiques from any period or place can be found here. It is up to the dealers to provide the focus, which they do. This means controlled diversity. You can bounce from concentrated views of French Art Deco to early Modern art to pre-Columbian ceramics in one aisle.

It helps that Salon is just hitting its stride, in its second year under this name, its third altogether. With 53 participants instead of the 60 or 65 usual to the armory, it is spacious and logistically relaxed. The large majority of outstanding European dealers (31), many of them from Paris, may guarantee freshness for several years to come.

The initial impression is of contrasting phases and styles of Modern design. Left to right, just inside the entrance, there is a lineup of impertinent decorative objects in glass and ceramics from the 1950s by the restless Ettore Sottsass, arrayed on two startling consoles made of steel and birch-tree trunks (bark intact) by Andrea Branzi, at Friedman Benda. Across the aisle, Galerie Downtown — François Laffanour is juxtaposing Charlotte Perriand’s signature shelves and a great table from the 1930s with the low-lying, nearly abstract furniture in black wood with cowhide upholstery that the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer designed for his own home in the 1960s.

And a few more steps away, Galerie L’Arc en Seine has mounted an impeccable  white-on-white presentation of French Art Deco that includes parchment-covered cabinets by Jean-Michel Frank and a pair of small armchairs by Pierre Chareau upholstered in alpaca, announcing a theme of white fuzzy seating that has echoes elsewhere. Also here: a small gourdlike, lusciously glazed ceramic jar from 1892-93 by the French Art Nouveau s master Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat with a tiny bronze stem-shaped lid by Alphonse Voisin-Delacroix. It announces the DNA of the ceramic eccentricities of our own Adrian Saxe.(...) Click on the title to read all the article on the nytimes website

The Salon: Art + Design is an art fair at the Park Avenue Armory with works from 53 exhibitors.

How do artworks and furniture from the 16th century to the present get into museums? Most international survey museums were built upon the existing collections of aristocrats or the donations of wealthy patrons. But new acquisitions often go through art dealers, and an art fair like The Salon: Art + Design is the kind of place where you might see a few before they find institutional homes.

This is the first year for the Salon, organized jointly by Sanford L. Smith & Associates and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, Paris, an association of dealers in historical design (or what used to be called “antiques”). Thirty-one Syndicat dealers are included in this show of 53 exhibitors, many appearing in New York for the first time.

One of the most impressive inclusions is De Jonckheere Gallery, an old masters dealer from Geneva (until recently Paris) whose darkened booth includes spotlighted works like “The Harvest” (1621), by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, which is similar in its composition and observation of the seasons to “The Harvesters” (1565), by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, at the Metropolitan Museum. Also at De Jonckheere is a small panel by Lucas Cranach the Elder, “Portrait of the Elector of Saxony, Frederick III, Known as Frederick the Wise,” signed in 1532 with a serpent rather than Cranach’s name, and an extraordinary little painting on copper by Jan van Kessel (Breughel the Younger’s nephew) from 1659 that was made for a cabinet of curiosities and depicts insects, flowers and shells against a white ground...

2012 / Sanford Smith’s Salon Debuts at the Park Avenue Armory Tonight | Object Lessons | ARTINFO.com | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

It was around a year ago today that Paris-based gallerist Patrick Perrin and veteran fair organizer Sanford Smith opened the inaugural Pavilion of Art and Design New York at the Park Avenue Armory, the locale the blue-chip fair had long coveted for its first stateside foray. Despite the show’s commercial and critical success, PADNY turned out to be a one-time endeavor, following the widely publicized falling out between Perrin and Smith (it involved petitions to boycott each others’ fairs, billing disputes, name-calling in the media, and other quarrels less-than-becoming of grown men).

Bouncing back from the very public dissolution of PADNY, Smith, the longstanding producer of Works on Paper, Modernism and Outsider Art Fair, was quick to put together a new show in its stead (he has, after all, a five-year contract for the Armory’s November slot). This time around he’s also found French backing, but now on a larger scale. He and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, the highly respected organizers of the behemoth Paris Biennale des Antiquaires (for which Karl Lagerfeld designed an opulent mise-en-scene in the storied Grand Palais earlier this year, sans payment), debut The Salon: Art + Design tonight. The Salon à New York : de plus en plus américain

The Salon à New York : de plus en plus américain | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

Dubbed by The New York Times as “a museum in the making at the Park Avenue Armory”, this week The Salon Art + Design, once again, will aim at being the year's top fair on East 66th Street & Park.  This show is very well known to mix art, design and decorative art objects from dozens of dealers from around the globe. Of the original European dealers, many including names like, L’Arc en Seine, Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Galerie Christian Deydier, Vallois, Galerie Gmurzynska, Galerie Boulakia, Robilant + Voena, Galerie Beres, Brame + Lorenceau and Kraemer are returning.
The new contingent of dealers includes three new ethnographic galleries: Mermoz and Galerie 1492, both specializing in Pre-Colombian art, and Galerie Lucas Ratton, a 3rd generation specialist in African Art. New entries in art include Keitelman Gallery from Brussels who features 20th century avant-garde masters and the Tasende Gallery from Los Angeles and LaJolla, who will bring outstanding 20th century paintings and sculpture. On the design front, Cristina Grajales a leading New York decorative arts dealer who cultivates emerging contemporary designers will show eclectic new work. The combination of a preponderance of 20th century fine and decorative arts, some ethnographic and antique pieces created a unique and memorable show. Of the Salon, Christian Deydier, President of the Syndicate had this to say: “I am extremely happy that the SNA, in partnership with Sanford Smith for the second time, will present some of its top dealers during The Salon in New York. Personally, I feel that the first edition of The Salon was very successful  and there has never been any question in my participation in the second edition." Benoit Sapiro of Le Minotaure, a leading Parisian art gallery commented: “it is very important for us to be present in New York. The first edition of The Salon NY was a great success and for us it was obvious to return.” The fair opens to the public on November 14th through November 18th. The Park Avenue Armory is located at 643 Park Avenue at 66th Street, New York City. Opening Night Preview Event is on Thursday, November 14th, 2013, from 6:30 – 9:30 PM, and the price is $125 per person. A portion of the proceeds will be gifted to the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club.
