Age of Distraction: Why It’s Crucial for Students to Learn to Focus

Age of Distraction: Why It’s Crucial for Students to Learn to Focus | Tech Alert! | Scoop.it
Learning to focus on one task while tuning out the many distractions vying for attention is a crucial life skill that some students are missing.

Via Linda Guthrie
Tina Jameson's insight:

While being 'tech literate' is essential, we also need to explicitly provide times for prolonged concentration, without the distraction of technology.  This article links the ability to focus consistently with behaviour and the ability of people to regulate their emotions.

As a library professional whose main goal is to encourage reading, I  believe this article supports the necessity of valuing periods of 'tech free' sustained reading opportunities.

The Ultimate Guide to the Invisible Web - OEDB.org

The Ultimate Guide to the Invisible Web - OEDB.org | Tech Alert! | Scoop.it
The vast majority of the Internet lies in the Deep Web, sometimes referred to as the Invisible Web. The actual size of the Deep Web is impossible to measure, but many experts estimate it is about 500 times the size of the web as we know it.
Tina Jameson's insight:

Facinating and vital reading; understand the difference between 'surface web' - that which is easily accesible through traditional web crawlers, and the 'deep web' - favoured by intelligence networks!..This article also looks at why Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become so important if you want to build a strong online profile - and explores ways in which you can do this.

For those of you who are still using iGoogle, the time has come, since it's going to close its doors at the end of play today. I wrote a post a while ago on alternatives, which I'm including below, with some editing.

If you like your homepage to be tailored to your personal needs and links - then Phil has a few suggestions / assessments of a few.  I like to use Symbaloo myself.

Tina Jameson's insight:

If this works as well as is claimed - then sounds a fantastic tool. (Will confirm thoughts after having played with it for a while!) Currently in AppStore for $2.99.  Its main feature is being able to 'multi task' on the iPad, by having a split screen, with a powerful clipping / annotating tool.

Llandrillo Library's curator insight, September 4, 2013 4:14 AM

Written by young people, parents and experts in firewalls, networking and wireless systems, as well as advanced Mac and Firefox users. This is a fresh approach to the topic of esafety, digital citizenship and is for anyone who uses the "Net every day and want to know how to secure their systems, preserve their Net lifestyles, and protect their data"

Trevor Sokolowski's curator insight, May 12, 2015 7:13 PM

It is our job to teach our youth at a young age the dangers of the internet. Giving your kids your credit cards to use freely on the internet is very stupid and could lead to their future and your future savings being wasted.

-Curation

Tina Jameson's insight:

Due to constantly changing technology and social network development, it is vital that we teach students  (and ourselves) the importance of filtering information and extracting the valuable.  They also need to be able to identify ways to link and share media appropriately, and to be able to curate and add value to information that is sourced.

How a Teacher Librarian in CO Prepares Her Students to Go Online. First. | Common Sense Media http://t.co/XKwqhJPUzc #hcslib
Tina Jameson's insight:

Prepare students for their online future: this freely available online tool allows students to 'play' and work their way through different levels, building up vital understanding of 'digital footprints' and cyber safety in the process.  Seems to be aimed at a junior primary to middle school level.

This article explains how one Librarian has used the tool successfully, and provides links to the 'Digital Passport' program.

Kristen Lassiter's curator insight, November 5, 2013 10:35 PM

This is something to look into for my own library. It is so important that today's students learn how to use the Internet correctly and safely. The Digital Passport may be a great tool to teach students about Internet use.

Deborah Fillman's curator insight, November 6, 2013 5:06 PM

Love the idea of teaching kids digital "self-defense," rather than focusing on erecting barriers they might see as challenges to overcome, or "problems" to solve. They not only need to guard against bullies and predators, but also that  that they have a "digital footprint" that will follow them throughout their lives.
