With Great Power Came No Responsibility | by Cory Doctorow | Medium.com

Last night, I traveled to Toronto to deliver the annual Ursula Franklin Lecture at the University of Toronto’s Innis College.

The lecture was called “With Great Power Came No Responsibility: How Enshittification Conquered the 21st Century and How We Can Overthrow It.” It’s the latest major speech in my series of talks on the subject, which started with last year’s McLuhan Lecture in Berlin:

https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/30/go-nuts-meine-kerle/#ich-bin-ein-bratapfel

And continued with a summer Defcon keynote:

https://pluralistic.net/2024/08/17/hack-the-planet/#how-about-a-nice-game-of-chess

This speech specifically addresses the unique opportunities for disenshittification created by Trump’s rapid unscheduled midair disassembly of the international free trade system. The US used trade deals to force nearly every country in the world to adopt the IP laws that make enshittification possible, and maybe even inevitable. As Trump burns these trade deals to the ground, the rest of the world has an unprecedented opportunity to retaliate against American bullying by getting rid of these laws and producing the tools, devices and services that can protect every tech user (including Americans) from being ripped off by US Big Tech companies.

Is Nvidia an American asset — or a globalist power? | by Daniella Cheslow | Digital Future Daily | POLITICO.com

President Donald Trump’s whirlwind tour of the Gulf last week – and the attendant blitz of AI dealmaking – promised numbers so absurd they seemed mystical. And no company was more at the center of the action than Nvidia.

The Santa-Clara based company, which makes the powerful chips core to training the world’s most sophisticated AI models, signed a deal to sell “several hundred thousand” of its most advanced chips to Saudi Arabia. Another deal is reportedly under discussion for Nvidia to sell more than a million chips to the UAE.

Nvidia has recently emerged as a tentpole of the U.S. tech renaissance promised by Trump.

Trump Administration Halts $14.1 Million in Funding to Increase Internet Access in Massachusetts | by Press Release | Mass.gov

Boston — The Healey-Driscoll Administration is raising the alarm about the Trump Administration’s recent action to terminate $14.1 million in federal funding to expand internet access for veterans, rural communities and individuals with disabilities in Massachusetts. The previously awarded funding from the Digital Equity Act (DEA) Capacity Grant Program would have provided communities with the tools, skills and resources to expand the adoption and use of high-speed internet service.

“Everyone deserves access to the internet. It’s essential for being able to participate in our economy and utilize the resources and services that so many of us rely on,” said Governor Maura Healey. “It’s terrible that the Trump Administration is blocking our efforts to bring internet access to veterans, rural communities and individuals with disabilities across the state.”

In his tour through the Middle East this past week, President Trump announced major agreements with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that will see billions of dollars in American AI chips sold to the Gulf states for installation in what will be some of the world’s biggest data centers, happily collocated alongside gigawatts of cheap Gulf power constructed quickly and without all those pesky American environmental obstacles. The chip companies love it. The AI companies love it. The sheikhs love it. But is it good for the United States?

AZ: Phoenix City Council to consider zoning policy for data centers | by Jeremy Duda | Axios.com

Phoenix is on the verge of enacting zoning regulations to limit where data centers can be located.

Why it matters: Data centers use large amounts of energy and space and can bring negative effects like noise pollution to surrounding communities, per an analysis by city staff.

State of play: The city wants to direct data centers away from mixed-use, walkable and transit-oriented communities.

  • They create few jobs, take up land that could be used for employment and housing, and make "inactive" stretches of street, staff wrote.

Zoom in: Under the proposal, data centers would be restricted to areas zoned for industrial and some commercial use.

Trump’s Tech Governance: Making Sense of the First 100 Days | by Lilian Coral | NewAmerica.org | Surfing the Broadband Bit Stream | Scoop.it

Trump’s first few months back in the Oval Office have been a concerted effort to assert authoritarian control.

In the wake of the 2024 election results, the Open Technology Institute (OTI) has closely observed the direction of U.S. tech policy under a second Trump presidency. OTI is a program that envisions all Americans having access to technology and its benefits. Underlying this vision are principles of openness and privacy. We hoped this administration would continue to uphold some of the basic principles that have steered the open web for much of its lifespan—openness, security, and innovation.

As part of New America’s Technology and Democracy programs, we highlighted five key tech policy directions—not tailored to a particular political party but instead focused on advancing fundamental policies that ensure emerging technologies serve the public good. We urged the Trump administration to prioritize:

How easy is it for Chinese exporters to pivot to other markets? | by Jennifer Pak | Marketplace.org

How easy is it for Chinese exporters to pivot to other markets? | by Jennifer Pak | Marketplace.org | Surfing the Broadband Bit Stream | Scoop.it

The Xiangguang Hats company from China’s southern Guangdong province is one exporter able to expand beyond the U.S. market.

It started when President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on certain Chinese exports in 2018 during his first term. Xiangguang’s hats, which include baseball hats, trucker hats and cartoon bear hats with floppy ears, faced an extra 20% duties.

Back then, 40% of Xiangguang’s sales were to the U.S.

“But now, we sell mainly to South Africa, to big brands like supermarkets. So, our sales to the U.S. have dropped a lot — to about 15%,” Xiangguang owner, Wu Qizhen, told Marketplace at a recent Shanghai trade show.

The U.S. remains a major destination for Chinese exports but the market has been shrinking from 19% in 2018 to just under 15% last year.
