This program was borne out of the imagination of Western Australian educators wanting to generate authentic learning experiences for WA school students to apply STEM-inspired, curriculum-linked, design-thinking processes to solving real-world problems relating to the immediate and future impacts of COVID-19 and other community related needs in Western Australia.

Enter the Global Challenge platform. Through self-paced learning pathways, learners work independently and in groups to navigate training curricula and embark on team-based challenges to answer critical questions and engage in problem and project-based experiences.

Useful insights into creating deep student-led collaborations - I especially liked this point: "CREATE LEARNING ACTIVITIES THAT ARE COMPLEX Students need a reason to collaborate. If the assignment is too simple, they can more easily do it alone. At most, they may check in with each other or interact in superficial ways. The real reason to collaborate is because the task is complex—it is too difficult and has too many pieces to complete alone." The rationale behind STEM4Innovation assumes that the challenges will create this requisite complexity.

This site will be used to collect student projects. Once completed project work is submitted it will be offered to up to 3 reviewers. Ideally, 1 teacher, 1 academic, and 1 industry representative will review and provide feedback to students.
Submissions of high interest, exemplary quality, or outstanding innovation may be invited to present their work publicly at showcase events around Western Australia. The selection of teams to present is at the discretion of event organisers.
