Blog Bank
What if you could get PAID to blog? Sounds great right? But there's a problem. I don't blog to get paid. I blog to give back
Blog Bank is an interesting startup with an easy to use, well-crafted microblogging and micropayments User Interface. I blog almost daily and know a passel of bloggers. Would they like to get paid?
Sure, but no one I know blogs to get paid OR we get "paid" in other currency such as followers, shares, and likes. If you read the great book DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Pink note his discussion of mercenaries vs altruists.
Pink puts the money motivated at 15% of the population with 85% wanting to "do the right thing". Every blogger I know would blog and is blogging without a thought to currency compensation.
"Blogger psychology" creates a significant barrier for BlogBank.com as structured today. The chance even my friends with following that dwarfs mine would make enough to pay for the meal I just had at Durham's Burger Bach seems remote and besides the point - they don't care and don't blog to make burger money.
On the other hand, BlogBank.com has created a smooth, mobile friendly and potentially cool tool IF / WHEN they expand their game. My friends don't blog for cash, but they sure do so for OTHER KINDS OF COMPENSATION (OKC).
I try to keep a running total in my head. When someone shares, likes or does some menschy thing to support Curagami.com or content on one of my social nets I try to make a mental, "need to pay back" note. If that "mental note" sounds precarious and fraught with lost opportunity you know me (lol).
What if BlogBank.com could do some basic Online Reputation Management and tell me when I'm OVER or UNDER with major supporters, those who JUST supported me (or my content) and alerted me to those I SHOULD be supporting?
If you read David Amerland's important What If We Had A New Value System for Goods and Services you can tell that one stumbling block is lack of a BANK. Maybe BlogBank.com isn't what it thinks it is or, better yet, maybe it is what we need it to be they just don't know it yet :). Marty
