Kim Planert, composer of 2012’s TV drama MISSING, provides Tracksounds with an insight into a European composer’s life in Hollywood and the link between the skies and scores.
A great Hollywood blockbuster score doesn't come around too often — after all, no one wants to spend $100 million or more then weave in a risky soundtrack that could derail an audiences reception. Thankfully, Marvel Studios went against the grain and let the legendary Alan Silvestri deliver a rousing, old school score for their 2011 period action adventure flick Captain America: The First Avenger. If there's anyone worth taking a gamble on, it's Silvestri, a two-time Oscar-nominated composer whose works can be heard in such films as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, The Abyss, The Quick and the Dead, Contact and the Back to the Future trilogy.
Emmy Award-winning composer, Geoff Zanelli, masterfully created the score for Disney’s upcoming fantasy drama directed by Peter Hedges, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton, out in theaters August 15th. “Because this movie, in the words of Peter, is about what children can teach you if you let them, it would’ve been hard for me to get in touch with the film if I wasn’t a father.” Zanelli further explains how important being a father of a two year-old daughter was to writing a score for a film about parenthood. “It’s like method acting, or method composing,” he adds. “And this is the first thing of mine that my daughter has really responded to.” He explains how fatherhood has changed him, “Had you asked me five years ago if I could’ve written the score for this film, I would’ve said yes without really knowing that I actually couldn’t have. The fact that I’m a father has had a huge impact on the score that I wrote. Fatherhood has made me much more in tune.”

Prokofiev's rich legacy -- from film scores to football scoresIrish IndependentIt's been a while since I hove to in Donetsk...
His output was considerable, with seven symphonies, a clutch of concertos, not to mention film scores to his name. And beyond them, Prokofiev reached into the cinema, influencing composers like John Williams. Home Alone, Hook, The Empire Strikes Back are all movies that feature music by Williams bearing the stamp of Ukraine.
You could even consider Prokofiev's masterpiece a kind of prototype film score. Peter and the Wolf was conceived as symphonic fairytale, its characters each represented by an instrument, a young person's guide to the orchestra for the stage. It also inspired movie music, notably the 1983 comedy A Christmas Story.
WhatCulture! recently sat down for an exclusive interview with renowned film composer Robert Folk. Best known for his work on ‘Beastmaster 2’, ‘The Neverending Story 2’, ‘Toy Soldiers’, ‘Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls’ and of course, ‘Police Academy’, the 63-year-old L.A based musician is spritely and charming. Folk, who was born in New York, has an East Coast accent with a soft warm roll in it; something which one comes to associate with the cultured and educated members of American society. Sporting a healthy glow, he sits in an office decorated with posters of the films he has previously scored – a customary sight amongst film professionals.

I really want to like Jonny Greenwood’s compositional career. Radiohead were the first band I loved, and I think that they helped shape my musical tastes and aesthetics more than most composers. I recall excitedly pre-ordering Greenwood’s first classical foray, the soundtrack to the film Bodysong, as soon as I found out about it back in 2003. And I was thrilled the following year by the announcement that he had been recruited to the position of Composer in Residence for the BBC Concert Orchestra. This was evidence, to my excitable teenage brain, that pop music was real, that it could achieve things, that my school music teacher was wrong. Pop music mattered. There was a composer in Radiohead.
This past winter, we were able to attend a scoring session for Oscar-nominated composer John Powell's animated feature film project, Dr. Seuss's The Lorax.
