“I compose music and I play the piano. Recently, I composed and recorded six songs for a film. Right now, it’s too early to talk about it. Hopefully, by the end of this year or the next year, you will get to listen to those songs,” the 31-year-old said here Tuesday at the launch of the Volkswagen coffee table book.

Arbitrage focuses on the life of powerful businessman Robert Miller (Richard Gere), a man whose world is surrounded by rich mahogany, dollar signs, and the insides of town cars. His life is one you would expect for a man in his position, but Cliff Martinez takes a more unexpected route with his score, giving this stiff and almost antiquated environment some real texture and vibrancy. The juxtaposition of these classic settings with Martinez’s more modern, electronic sound helps create a palpable feeling of anxiety as you watch these cracks start to form on these perfect lives while a more kinetic and unsettling sound begins creeping in.

On the world film scoring scene, few countries seem to be producing such melody-rich composers as Spain, a region that has seen any number of unabashedly musical work from such artists as Roque Banos (“Intruders”), Javier Navarette (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), Zeltia Montes (“Lovetown”) and Pascal Gaigne (“Chaika”). With many of these composers now scoring films on our side of the ocean, it’s likely that the next wave of major Hollywood recognition will be taking Fernando Velázquez in its wake, especially for how powerfully he captures the most disastrous aquatic catastrophe in recent memory with his score for “The Impossible.”
Miriam Cutler is an Emmy nominated Los Angeles based musician. Although her name may not sound immediately familiar, Miram has made the scores to many well known films. These are projects like like Lost In La Mancha, Chris & Don, Ghosts Of Abu Ghraib, , and more, films and documentaries that are lauded for their investigating and analysis of everything from botched filmmaking to an AIDs activist’s struggle. Her most recent work was on the Rory Kennedy’s HBO documentary Ethel, which was released in late October. Curious about the process of film scoring and what the landscape of the industry is like, we spoke with Miriam to hear about her rich history in the Los Angeles music landscape, how she arrived to film scoring, and what it is like being a woman in the film industry.
There is a lot to be said about composer Miriam Cutler. She's clearly a hard worker (e.g. she worked her way up from a band in the 1970's to an up-and-coming film/documentary composer who's worked on some well-known/respected projects). She loves what she does and is open to trying new things (e.g. she's worked with an array of different people and projects, be they big or small). She's a woman in the industry. This is particularly influential to me because I am an aspiring woman composer who is floating in a sea of men. Seeing her success gives me hope; hope that I can do what I love, not that I get famous for doing it. As Miriam so wisely says it, "leaving out our (women's) contributions is a waste of tremendous resources."

The film hits Indian theatres on November 13. * IANS
