Video Games At The Grammys

Video Games At The Grammys | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

If you follow Awards Season, then you know the Grammys are this weekend. Just about a year ago, The Feed featured my thoughts on why video game music deserves a dedicated Grammy Award. In the intervening year, the Grammys have gone through a major overhaul, reducing the total number of categories from 109 down to 78. While this may sound like a bad thing for video game music, it really isn’t. In truth, both original and compilation game soundtrack albums (and individual songs) have been eligible to win a Grammy award, just not in a dedicated category. Be that as it may, if we as game music fans had any say in the nominations or categories, things might be different.

Oscars 2012: Slighted Soundtracks And Fantasy Scores | California Literary Review

Oscars 2012: Slighted Soundtracks And Fantasy Scores | California Literary Review | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

Listen closely, and you can hear murmuring in the village. Discontented whispers about the Academy Award nominees. It’s a very hip village, don’t you know.

As in any healthy Oscars race, fans are making much of the various glaring omissions from this year’s nominee list. Nobody wants to give Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling, or Steven Spielberg a trophy, despite the fact that they worked their tails off in just about every film released last year. No gracious nods to Mia Wasikowska, Michael Shannon, or Albert Brooks. The lovable Brooks even re-invented himself as a cold-blooded killer, but as Sir Ben Kingsley (of Sexy Beast) should have warned him, that doesn’t always work.

Are acad rules out of synch? - Entertainment News, Film News, Media - Variety

With all the criticism that the Academy music branch gets, the one thing that everyone can agree on is this: They follow their own very strict rules.
However, a variety of observers say that maybe the rules themselves need modification -- especially when it comes to "adapted scores," which are no longer eligible under Academy's mandate. Or "partial scores," which never have been.

In the past few years, several acclaimed works that were not entirely "original" have been disqualified as "scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music," according to the Acad rule book.

How The Academy Lost Touch With Movie Music : NPR | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
Commentator Joe Reid says part of the reason the Best Original Song category at the Oscars has gotten so puny is that what's really interesting in movie music has nothing to do with the pop hits that once defined the race.

Tracksounds Now!: Grammy Nominations for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

For those of you who follow the Grammy's, below is a list of this year's nominees from the only category worth caring about. I still don't get their qualification calendar, mixing releases from two different calendar years. In fact, it irritates me so much that the Grammy's have become irrelevant to me....but that's me.
