Music Has Always Sounded Bad!  A Reponse to "The Distortion in Sound"

... Aside from ultimately wondering what the point of this documentary was, I also felt that, while I may agree with the conclusion that the masses may be missing out on the finer nuances of their music, as original recorded, their arguments were a little weak.  Saying that compressed audio through tiny earbuds or cheap, on-board computer speakers, sounds bad compared to the original recordings is true enough, but to suggest that this is something new and that some undeclared action must be taken is disingenuous at best.  The fact is that the masses have been listening to comparatively poor sounding music for decades.  It's simply a case of whether the music sounds "good enough." Consumers weigh this against other factors in their listening experience like:  portability, accessibility, and cost.  The fact is the masses are saying with their wallets that compressed music is, at most times. good enough....

Tracksounds Now!: The Privilege of Listening - What Andrea Bocelli Reminded Me About Music

Tracksounds Now!: The Privilege of Listening - What Andrea Bocelli Reminded Me About Music | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

by Christopher Coleman

I live in Orlando, Florida - land of rides, resorts, and restaurants. At any given moment there seem to be more people visiting the city than actual residents. But for all of the attractions, I wouldn't say there is a lot of "high culture" going on in the City Beautiful.

So when an opportunity to catch an artist like Andrea Bocelli comes your way, you take it...if you can afford it. Now, if it also happens to be your mother's 75th birthday AND she just happens to be visiting from 3000 miles away on that very day...AND she happens to love Bocelli, you find a way to afford it.

While I looked forward to the first live concert that I've attended in years, I was unprepared for a huge lesson I would learn in the process of being washed over by Bocelli, Guitierrez, and Headley's voices...not to mention the thunderous choir and orchestra.

As I sat next to a woman, who started off as refined as could be, but ended up standing, fist-pumping and "Woohooing" with the best of them (No. Not my mother. She was on the other side of me, but she let out a few diminutive "Woos!" of her own), I began to remember that there is something about a masterful, live performance that simply cannot be duplicated any other way.

John Williams at 80 - More Than a Movie Composer? | Aphorisms

John Williams at 80 - More Than a Movie Composer? | Aphorisms | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

As John Williams turns eighty, my thoughts and reactions pertaining to this famed musician splay in more than the one direction pointed at his movie music. To explain:
When I think of the famed composers who wrote for the movies, I think of the likes of Max Steiner, or Franz Waxman, or Miklos Rosza, or Herbert Stothart, and others who were connected with such screen classics as "Gone With The Wind," "How Green Was My Valley," "Mrs. Miniver," "Casablanca," etc., etc., etc.

In the case of these famous composers, I was able virtually every time to identify the composer before his name appeared on the Credits list at the beginning of each movie. For the most part, the generic nature of their music was clearly available to me - and I hasten to point out that the word 'generic' is not in a negative light; actually, their particular styles led to the enhancement of their careers.
