There are a few common misconceptions related to 404 pages and SEO that I’ll attempt to clarify. While it’s common (and technically correct) to call 404 pages “errors,” I am not a fan of that terminology. 404s are the expected result when a website is unable to return a given request, if there is no URL to deliver. If we wanted to be picky about it, we’d say 404 pages are not errors and can even be (blasphemy!) an acceptable user experience.

"Bing has announced support for HTML5 pushState as a way to implement AJAX on a site in a way that enables Bing to crawl and index the URLs and content. As Google has supported this implementation since early 2012, site owners finally have an AJAX option that can be crawled and indexed by both major search engines."
Fred's insight:
glad to learn pushState is supported by both Google and Bing as it is the simplest way to implement SEO-friendly Ajax!

Nearly two years after making one of the biggest changes to secure search that resulted in a steady rise in "(not provided)" data, Google has made all searches encrypted using HTTPS. This means no more keyword data will be passed to site owners.

Great description of what content curation is and why/how it works!

Content curation could be an extremely risky practice if you don't put a lot of effort in, or it lacks editorial voice or a distinctive point of view. After all, Google already has a curated list of content.
Fred's insight:

"While duplicate content as an SEO problem has been around for years, the way Google handles it has evolved dramatically and seems to only get more complicated with every update. Panda has upped the ante even more. So, I thought it was a good time to cover the topic of duplicate content, as it stands in 2011, in depth. This is designed to be a comprehensive resource – a complete discussion of what duplicate content is, how it happens, how to diagnose it, and how to fix it. Maybe we’ll even round up a few rogue pandas along the way."
Fred's insight:
THE reference article on duplicate content, a must read.

"In the past month, Google quietly made a change aimed at encrypting all search activity — except for clicks on ads. Google says this has been done to provide “extra protection” for searchers, and the company may be aiming to block NSA spying activity. Possibly, it’s a move to increase ad sales. Or both. Welcome to the confusing world of Google secure search."

"Google’s on an uncompromising mission. It wants to give its users access to accurate information, unique content and the finest writers. It continually tweaks and improves its algorithms so that the best of the web gets the exposure it deserves. Unfortunately, there’s a flipside: a penalty. That’s the consequence of Google taking issue with something on your site. Sometimes a penalty is well deserved, but even if you know you’re in the wrong, you probably want to do something about it."
Fred's insight:
Very helpful to understand how Google penalties work and how to handle them.

"First it was Flash, then AJAX, and now…. parallax design. As SEOs, we often find ourselves butting heads with Web designers over website design and usability. Certain design approaches and techniques, while helpful for usability, may not be ideal for SEO purposes. But that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice good design for solid SEO — we just have to be creative and find solutions that marry design with SEO."
Fred's insight:
Great analysis and advices if you're considering a parallax design.
