In the wake of the MtGox debacle, two more Bitcoin companies have been struck hard by hackers – forcing one of them to go out of business entirely.

Silk Road 2 moderator Defcon reported in a forum post that hackers have used atransaction malleability exploit to hack the marketplace.

The hackers stole over 88,0004474.26 bitcoins worth $2,747,000, emptying the site’s escrow account.

Hopefully other anti-virus vendors will follow MalwareBytes’s lead and add detection of this potentially unwanted application, as I cannot imagine many people wanting their computer’s performance to be halved because it is secretly making money for someone else.

Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, has gone offline, apparently after losing hundreds of millions of dollars due to a years-long hacking effort that went unnoticed by the company.

As many as two million European users of Yahoo may have received PC malware from virus-laden ads served by its homepage over a four-day period last week.

Some of the malware would turn PCs into bitcoin miners - a huge drain on its computing resources - without users' knowledge. Yahoo has been criticised for not saying how many people could be affected or doing anything to help those with the malware, which attacked flaws in Java modules on systems.

The latest virus is based on spam emails that take users to a website called bitcoin-alarm.net. This promises them a Windows app that will send them the latest Bitcoin prices via SMS. But the download contains a Trojan which Arbor research analyst Kenny MacDermid, who discovered the malware, said is designed for stealing login information, and is likely in this case being used to steal Bitcoins.

Atrax, is an inexpensive crimeware kit that comes with a slew of capabilities including browser data extraction, Bitcoin mining and the capability to launch DDoS attacks.
