Consumer goods giants are working on radically new approaches to end deforestation in supply chains amid a recognition that hundreds of companies that made commitments to source deforestation-free commodities by 2020 will abjectly fail to meet the deadline. According to The Supply Change Initiative (SCI), which tracks 800 companies with exposure to soy, beef, palm oil and timber – commodities that are together responsible for 80% of all tropical deforestation – 469 have commitments to address deforestation.

The 2018 Global Slavery Index provides a country-by-country ranking of the number of people in modern slavery, as well as an analysis of the actions governments are taking to respond, and the factors that make people vulnerable. The Index reveals that more than 400,000 people — or one in every 800 — in the U.S. are working under forced labor conditions, primarily in domestic work, agriculture and farm work, travelling sales crews, restaurant or food services, and health and beauty services.

The first full version of the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark is published today, with key findings on companies in the apparel, agricultural products and extractives sectors. The results reveal that there is a race to the top in business and human rights performance, but only amongst a welcome cluster of leaders. The great majority have barely left the starting line, with 40 of the 101 companies surveyed failing to show any evidence of identifying or mitigating human rights issues in their supply chains.
