Problem-solving: Bees Solve Complex Problems Faster Than Supercomputers

Problem-solving: Bees Solve Complex Problems Faster Than Supercomputers | Problem Solving in HE | Scoop.it

Extract taken from:http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2012/07/bees-solve-complex-problems-faster-than-supercomputers-weekend-feature.html

In a landmark 2010 study, researchers found that bumblebees were able to figure out the most efficient routes among several computer-controlled "flowers," quickly solving a complex problem that even stumps supercomputers. We already know bees are pretty good at facial recognition, and researchers have shown they can also be effective air-quality monitors.

LEGO robots help kids solve tasks

LEGO robots help kids solve tasks | Problem Solving in HE | Scoop.it

Wauwatosa middle and elementary students are working with Harley-Davidson engineers to design, engineer and program LEGO robots for the worldwide competition First Lego League.

The competition has two parts, robot engineering and real-world problem solving. The theme this year is "Senior Solutions" and will see students tackling problems facing the elderly.

This is the district's third year of partnering with the Project Lead The Way club to compete in the event.

Can Individual Code Review Improve Solo Programming on an Introductory Course?

Peer code reviews have been successfully applied to the teaching of programming and can be applied to solo programming.
Collaborative approaches are currently popular and have been successfully applied though social interaction and assessment issues limit their application. It is believed that a checklist based individual code review can provide a framework which allows students to proofread their code prior to submission, improving performance. Pilot and follow-up studies were conducted at Swansea Metropolitan University and although the results are inconclusive some important observations are made with regards to the use of this technique. Further study into the effects of individual code reviews on student performance is recommended.

Rational versus intuitive problem solving: How thinking "off the beaten path" can stimulate creativity

Rational versus intuitive problem solving: How thinking "off the beaten path" can stimulate creativity | Problem Solving in HE | Scoop.it

We compared the effects of rational versus intuitive problem solving on creativity. We argued that therelative effectiveness of these approaches depends upon an individual’s typical thinking style such thatindividuals will be more creative when they adopt a problem-solving approach that differs from theirtypical style of thinking (e.g., individuals who avoid rational thinking will exhibit higher creativity whenthey are instructed to rely on rational problem solving). We tested this hypothesis in a sample of undergraduate students generating creative ideas in response to a real-world problem. In support of ourhypothesis, we found that problem-solving approach and individual differences in thinking style interactsuch that creativity is highest when individuals use a nontypical problem-solving approach.

Robotics within the teaching of problem-solving - NECTAR

Robotics within the teaching of problem-solving - NECTAR | Problem Solving in HE | Scoop.it

This paper considers the experiences of teaching on a module where problem-solving is taught first, then programming. The main tools for the problem-solving part, alongside two problem-solving approaches, are tasks using Mindstorm (LEGO, Denmark) robot kits. This is being done as a foundation step before the syntax of a language (Java) is taught to enable a Graphical User Interface (GUI) emulation of a previous robot problem.
Results of student evaluation and feedback will be presented and the use of two simulators will be considered
