This unit is about helping students compare their own childhood with the childhoods of their parents and grandparents. To do this, they will look at activities done each day during the week and on weekends, toys, games, music devices, school and life in general for themselves, a parent and a grandparent. There is a lot of dialogue between older family members and the students as they share their thoughts and memories with the children.

Letters of GOLD...This is an amazing find for great historical inquiry - a rare glimpse at the Victorian Gold Rush era through the eyes of a 12 year old child. An incredible classroom resource exploring child voice (perspective), significance and primary source analysis.

It is important to remember that children experience historical events as well as adults, and their perspective can sometimes shed light on aspects adult perspectives overlook. These letters proved to be a good insight into the life and beliefs of a British Quaker family making their way to the Victorian Goldfields in the 1800's.

Amazing treasure trove of activities and source materials to help you to further explore the world of 18th and 19th century convict transportation from Britain to Australia. A variety of teaching and learning strategies should be used to assist students to reflect on their own learning. Although these resources focus primarily on history, the Voyage Game has many curriculum connections in subject areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts, Computer Science and Technology as well as the cross-curriculum priorities.

A fabulous collection of historical stories and illustrations here. We can learn much about how a historical period viewed the abilities of its children by studying its children’s literature. And the very fact that children’s books were hardly published at all before the early 18th century tells us a lot about when and how modern ideas of childhood as a separate category of existence began.

While most kids today are fretting about the latest iPad or sneakers, children in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century routinely shouldered much of the responsibility of family life — particularly if the working male in the family fell ill or died. Author Edwin Barnard has written a book looking at the lives of the largely forgotten element of the colonial period; working class children.

The activities require students to look at how their school has changed over time. Students will also be able to develop their observation and deductive thinking skills by exploring their immediate environment. While the examples used focus on a particular school, the overall approach and most of the activities are readily adaptable for other schools or local sites.
