The F–6/7 Australian Curriculum for Humanities and Social Sciences aims to ensure that students develop: • a sense of wonder, curiosity and respect about places, people, cultures and systems throughout the world, past and present, and an interest in and enjoyment of the study of these phenomena • key historical, geographical, civic and economic knowledge of people, places, values and systems, past and present, in local to global contexts • an understanding and appreciation of historical developments, geographic phenomena, civic values and economic factors that shape society, influence sustainability and create a sense of belonging • the capacity to use inquiry methods and skills, including questioning, researching using reliable sources, analysing, evaluating and communicating • dispositions required for effective participation in everyday life, now and in the future, including critical and creative problem-solving, informed decision making, responsible and active citizenship, enterprising financial behaviour and ethical reflection.

Set up an interactive nature exploration table for children to explore and examine natural elements at first hand. Coupled with some nature journals it becomes a great way to introduce some simple science exploration into the home or classroom with a dedicated area for observation and learning.

SUMMARY This blog-type post is a useful resource for teachers, created by a geography teacher that includes five specific hands-on projects that students can complete in small groups, big groups and/or independently. All five projects have a focus on creating and understanding maps that involves collaboration with peers and creative thinking. TEACHING IDEAS Not only do these projects help students understand the characteristics of different types of maps by allowing them to create their own, the activities are also a great pathway to lead into class research and discussion about neighbouring countries to Australia. More specifically, with project 1, students can bring together their research about their own background and place a photo of them on the map and connect it to their location of origin. With this project, students can become aware of different places/countries their classmates come from, and each student could present/share stories using a map as a tool. It is a first hand experience students can have to understand both familiar and unfamiliar places outside of Australia. CONTENT & OUTCOMES - GE2-2: describes the ways people, places and environments interact - GE2-4: acquires and communicates geographical information using geographical tools for inquiry - ACHGK016: investigate Australia’s neighbouring countries and their diverse characteristics REFERENCES NSW Education Standards Authority. Having a sound knowledge of geography skills and tools is essential as well as understanding how to teach them. This Geoaction blog can provide a fantastic launch-pad for teachers wishing to extend their own professional understanding of geography before stepping into the classroom.
Some of the topics/resources accessible through this blog: -Inquiry Based Learning -Literacy -Fieldwork -Integrating Technology/ICT This blog also has a wealth of links to other primary Geography teaching resources such as scoop.it sites, games, lesson plans as well as other links to further blogs and resource sites. The introduction of the new Geography K-10 syllabus, combined with the need to meet the requirements as set out in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers could potentially place a great amount of stress on teachers of all experience levels when it comes to delivering rich and appropriate content for their classroom. Rae Carlson (2016) notes that a key component of effective teaching is enthusiasm and appreciation of the content form the teacher.
