For the third year in a row, I come back from the Savignano Immagini Festival (aka SiFest) with my eyes (and my ears) full of photography, of thoughts about photography, of faces from the world of photography. The 20th edition has been up to the task of celebrating such an important anniversary, and I will share some impressions with you through some posts on this blog.

The book jacket or cover, that single, simple printed sheet of paper: its primary function is to $€££. It needs to earn back the considerable investment everyone has made in planning, organizing, thinking about and realizing the book in its final physical form. There’s a hell of a lot riding on it. We all have to feel confident we’ve got it right.

Born in 1978, Andrew Esiebo lives and works in Ibadan, and is a founder member of the Nigerian photojournalism collective Black Box. Photography is beginning to make its presence felt in Nigeria, but is still a rare subject in schools.

Hein-Kuhn Oh, 1963, South-Korea, received a B.A. from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and an M.F.A. at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His career started as a documentary photographer capturing the social landscapes on the streets.

I remember then when I saw portraits from “Mona Lisas of the suburbs” by Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler for the first time, I was blown away. Seemingly very simple photographs, the portraits reveal enormous depth, while at the same time they are incredibly beautiful.

Je suis allé vendredi et samedi dernier à Bruxelles pour visiter (en deux fois) l’expo de et avec Jeff Wall avant qu’elle finisse, et voir la ville. La salle « minimale » est l’un des plus beaux « accrochages » que j’ai eu l’occasion de voir.

I was terrible at printing.. I always forgot the measurements, lost track of time, got lost in whatever music I was listening to. But I miss it terribly.. what I wouldn’t do for a dark room to escape to while seemingly having some purpose.

The saying, home is where the heart is, is not necessarily true. Home is where we connect to our identities and feel rooted to the world. The question is, is it where we come from or where we are are now?
