A recent article in the FastCo.Design blog highlights the T-Haler, a training inhaler prototype that, according to the creators can increase proper inhaler use three-fold in just three minutes of training.

That may not sound like a huge deal. Even someone who isn’t asthmatic and has never used an inhaler can probably visualize the process: shake, press down and take a big-gulp inhale. Easy enough? Not quite. Apparently, nearly 75% of patients use their inhalers improperly–an error that can lead to hospitalization, even death.

As well as being at the forefront of the entertainment industry, games are a rewarding form of personal expression and communication for millions of people around the world. Games also represent the most powerful ingredient in the human interaction with technology; fuelling development of the interface tools people take for granted in their relationships with computers and driving technical development.

Games could be the most important digital health tool of the 21st century and have a highly influential impact on the engagement pharmaceutical companies foster with health care professionals, patients and the public.

Innovation: the name of the game for Boehringer

Innovation: the name of the game for Boehringer | GAMIFICATION & SERIOUS GAMES IN HEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

Andrew Spong (@andrewspong) writes:

'By dint of the sheer weight of evidence that has accrued over the past three years alone, Boehringer Ingelheim may reasonably be identified as the pharma company that sets the pace for the industry in digital environments.

However, this is not because of Boehringer’s having led the way on facebook with regard to its handling of comments, nor its conversational disposition on Twitter, nor its experiments in the gamification of clinical research, nor the way it used social to raise awareness around atrial fibrillation, nor its experiments with outré humour.

It is not even because later this week Boehringer will become the first pharma company to launch a game which has been designed first and foremost to be fun and perhaps convey some indirect benefits, rather than a vehicle built for the primary purpose of delivering a direct message:

[Syrum] wasn’t built with a view to being an educational platform or anything like that. It’s very much a game which is meant to be engaging and entertaining to play. In the same way that Farmville doesn’t just appeal to people who like farms, Syrum isn’t just for people who like the pharmaceutical industry. It’s for anyone to play. John Pugh, Director of Digital, Boehringer Ingelheim

In the last instance, Boehringer merits recognition as the digital leader in the pharma industry not because of what it has achieved, but because of what its activities say about the cultural evolution that has taken place within the company. Boehringer’s every action speaks of its commitment to embodying what ‘being innovative’ means. Not its just giving lip-service to innovation. Not its hoping to be seen to be innovative whilst doing little of real merit. Not spending its time considering which ride to take next on the platform carousel.

The course that Boehringer has steered over the past three years marks it out as a company that aspires to being a leading company in digital environments, not just the leading pharma company in digital.'

Gamification in Pharma - what are companies doing?

Gamification in Pharma - what are companies doing? | GAMIFICATION & SERIOUS GAMES IN HEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it
Early efforts in the pharma space to harness the engagement factor in game technology focused on delivering a fun experience, with a tackedon educational component.

Ben Comer writes about the evolution of gaming in the healthcare space and where things are going and why. Gamification is something that apparently is not to be ignored in marketing with the widespread adoption of mobile devices and participation of nearly everyone in a social network sites. If you’re looking to gamify your brand you need to put education and leaning up front, and figure out what specific behaviours are unique to the patient audience to get the most out engagement.

The most effective way of learning and absorbing complex concepts is by doing it. Gamification technology and playfulness is a great way of doing this and can be used in simulations to help understand the consequences of certain behaviours and how these effects disease. This type of application allows the creation of vivid images and users to see the results of their choices.

Other games funded by Pharma, both of these are for diabetes patients hope to change patient behaviour. One encourages children to test their blood sugar through a Tamagotchi-style game rewarding children when they dutifully prick their finger and obtain the results. The other for women between 40 and 60 encourages them to share and discuss how they manage their disease providing each other with practical and emotional support.

The last game discussed is to reduce adverse events and is built around the concept of a tutorial to help parents inject their kids correctly. It coaches parents and lets them know if they’re doing a good job. This allows them to practice, therefore getting it right when they inject the children reducing any AEs.

For a few years now, there has been great deal of interest in using videogame technology to improve health and education. So far, there haven’t been any blockbusters in this space outside of “exergaming” titles like Wii Fit. I attended the Games for Change Festival in New York last month, and what I saw there gave me reason to believe that there will be some big hits for education and health videogames in the near future.
