Pharma Marketing Blog: Healthcare Marketers Trend Report 2014: I Give It a "C-Meh!" Rating

Pharma Marketing Blog: Healthcare Marketers Trend Report 2014: I Give It a "C-Meh!" Rating | Pharma: Trends and Uses Of Mobile Apps and Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Not all available market research is created equal," says Rich Meyer, author of DTC Marketing Blog. According to Meyer, "some research is a must have and provides insights, but there is also a lot of available research that doesn’t clarify findings and is written by journalists not people will real world pharma business experience." He goes on to rate various sources of pharma marketing research (here).

Meyer has two ratings:"A-Must Have" and "D-Pass," which means don't bother with it. Meyer doesn't have a "C-Meh!" rating -- that's my way of saying "lackluster, take it or leave it."

One study "written by journalists" is the MM&M/Ogilvy CommonHealth Healthcare Marketers Trend Report, the 2014 version of which was just published (here). Let me tell you why I give it a "C-Meh!" rating.

One surprising finding of this survey of 202 "qualified" senior executives -- "all director level and above" -- employed by pharmaceutical, biotechnology, devices and diagnostics companies, is that 22% of pharma marketing budgets of these individuals goes to some form of digital marketing (websites, digital ads, SEO marketing, and social media).

Great review  by John Mack, @pharmaguy of these trend "researches". Due to his investment in time, we can state: trend reports? "C-meh" ;-)

eMedToday's insight:

2 interesting facts

Brad Graner (InHealth) says Pharma has to think like hospitals when we market.  Hospitals are easily spending as much on DTC as Pharma is. He said 50% of all doctors and 75% of med students are currently employed by a hospital health system. Hospital marketing messages are around care,

support, understanding their unique patient needs, and customer service. There is something to be learned here for Pharma.

An irksome fact: HCPs are outside the examination room only 10% of their day, yet Pharma spends 90% of their digital budget targeting HCPs during this short window. Sounds like that strategy has to change.

Pharma lag in new marketing

Pharma lag in new marketing | Pharma: Trends and Uses Of Mobile Apps and Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Pharma has to play catch up to new media and marketing but it's a moving target as marketing evolves for empowered consumers. ... A well documented increase in digital media for HCP marketing. May 20, 2013 By Richard ...
eMedToday's insight:

What do Pharma do now:

"On the HCP said drug companies have laid off between 10-12% of their sales force and believe that digital marketing can be used to reach physicians however even though physicians are wired they just don’t seem to have the time or reason to engage pharma companies online.  This is why pharma companies need to get better at adding value to physicians and patient outcomes."

Note this issue is value to physicians and patents.

Key consclusion:

Traditional websites often serve as the hub for our brands, but they only offer one-way communication. There are a host of  other digital and social platforms that we need to consider and include when developing our overall digital strategies. As an industry, the current state of digital communications requires that we become more patient/consumer-centric, Sue says. We have to take an active role in managing our digital presence.

Prospects who visited a branded pharmaceutical site demonstrated a 14.8-point lift in aided awareness and an 8.8-point lift in unaided awareness.
eMedToday's insight:

Good graph.

Online pharmaceutical marketing continues to produce results, reports comScore in a new study. The 7th annual “Online Marketing Effectiveness Benchmarks for the Pharmaceutical Industry” study details the successes of online direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing, showing some brand awareness and favorability lifts from exposure to online banner ads, but greater impact from branded website visits. Additionally, site visitation tends to provide a significant lift in Rx conversion rates.

We had quite a discussion about what is 'social media' versus 'digital'. The problem is that 'digital' has become a bit of a 'last year' label in pharma – astonishing since we are certainly not expert in it yet!

"I suggested thinking about content differently, not as a promotional tool but a core service.  If you want to be seen as a leader you should be providing excellent content in that therapy area."

Pharma need to develop a way to use social media, use web sites, mobile app that deliver value to doctors and patients

Fusion is the integration of digital into the overall marketing mix. Tablet detailing is an example of cross channel opportunity being missed. Making tablet detailing a success is the top priority of over 300 Pharma marketers in 2013
