It may seem like teens are always over-sharing without a thought. But in a world where opting out of online culture is hardly an option, many take a far more sophisticated view of privacy than adults give them credit for.

Recently, Tonny Uhlin and I went into the studio to record the first episode of the “Next-generation Working Life” podcast. During this first episode, we talk about the big and small changes we see coming to our work places as we journey deeper into the Networked Society and how these will impact our working life going forward. Have a listen to the podcast here, or if you like, watch the video above and then read the full report: ‘Next-generation working life – from workplace to exchange space’.

You can gripe about Gen Y all you want. But if you can't attract them, you're going to lose the war for talent.

If you want to understand what’s happening in business and culture today, the tail end of the Agrarian Age offers several telling clues, according to Don Tapscott, co-author of “Wikinomics.” Monday morning, Don delivered the opening keynote at HR Technology Conference & Expo. He covered much ground—much like his book does. And the implications of his ideas are deep, going well beyond the scope of HR. One blog entry can’t do his presentation justice, and this blog entry doesn’t try to do so. But one thing Don covered is Generation Y’s sharp departure from older generations’ approach to working. That’s highly relevant to HR.

To all the millennials reading this – remember that time in school when your teacher spotted you texting? He or she triumphantly interrupted and asked you to repeat what they had just said. You did, to their astonishment. But they took your phone away anyway: ‘no mobile phones allowed!’ -

Teens have always been stereotyped as massive consumers of technology, but in some cases they're also the ones advancing it. Young people have long been avid early adopters, and not just of applications like Snapchat and Instagram.

A Millennial Branding study reported that 45% of Millennials will choose workplace flexibility over pay; 72% want to have a job where they can have an impact; and due to the impact of the recent recession and current high unemployment rate for young people, need economic security (according to a recent AP analysis, more than 53 percent of recent college grads are unemployed or underemployed). An MTV survey reported Millennials want more flexible hours and ability to work remotely with technology; they want to set their own hours and dress how they want; and they believe they can teach older workers and their bosses a thing or two.

Throughout the years, I’ve collected some of the most interesting primary and secondary research related to the millennial generation (also termed Gen Y). These stats shed lights on how the economy has affected their lives, their values, how they view the workplace, their consumer and investing habits, political views and entrepreneurial spirit. Here is my full list by category:

Historians often speak of the period from 1932 through 1980 as the New Deal Political Order—a period characterized by a Democratic political majority made possible by a coalition of Southern whites, northern liberals, African Americans, and unions. Although the Democrats won some battles and lost others, the political debates of the era were defined by the Democrats to such an extent that even when they lost, they often won, as when Richard Nixon supported policies that were pro-environment, pro-Social Security, and pro-national health care.

Dr. danah boyd (she prefers to style her name in lowercase letters) is a cutting-edge scholar of technology (at Microsoft Research Center, New York University, and Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society) and a youth advocate with the daunting research skills of an anthropologist and the political zeal of an activist. Her first book, "It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens" (Yale University Press: 296 pp., $25), proves she is a writer and thinker in a category of her own invention.

As it has been pointed out countless times in the media and through anecdotes, millennials in the workplace feel entitled to undeserved promotions and raises, are addicted to their smartphones and job hop every few years. The litany of complaints goes on, but of course no generation is as bad -- or as good -- as reported: Generation X was more than just a bunch of slackers and Baby Boomers' strengths shook off their juvenile delinquent label.

So now we have a generation, mostly Millenials, who suffered through the Great Recession -- many are still suffering -- and this is going to affect how they vote in future elections. Even a small effect of 10-15 percent could rock the electoral landscape. Given the closeness of presidential elections since 2000, as the older voters who tend to lean conservative pass away are replaced with, say, 5-8 percent of the electorate that is solidly Democratic (those who saw their ideological leanings shaped by the Great Recession) then there may well be a new Democratic hegemony for another generation.

Given the rise of the Sharing Economy, MindSwarms wanted to uncover Millennials’ attitudes and sharing brand relationships within this new economy. This curiosity led to the launch of a national study where we asked Millennials to talk about the Sharing Economy and how their participation in it differs from that of their parents.

The Sharing Economy and Millennials report published by MindSwarms, a disruptive digital market research platform, articulates a distinctly different version of the American Dream for the younger generation. A down economy has made this path difficult for Millennials, and “sharing brands” have enabled Millennials to enjoy rich products and experiences without the pressures of ownership. The video and full report from the Sharing Economy and Millennials study are available on the MindSwarms blog.

Digital natives are entering the workforce en masse, and by 2020 many of the old school, pen and paper types will be on the way out. The relationship between employee and employer is also changing. If you want folks to stick around you’d better at least match the kind of tools and technology on the job that they have access to at home. Pair this relentless consumer-grade expectation for mobile, social and globally accessible tools with ubiquitous access to work, and you can see the perfect storm that is challenging HR and IT leaders to deploy technology solutions to attract, retain and manage their workforce while creating a collaborative, engaging employee experience.

But even when manufacturers make attempts to hire younger workers, they’re frequently stymied by outside factors. Nearly three-fourths of survey respondents believe that negative perceptions about manufacturing careers discourage young people from working for them. These negative perceptions are widespread among the general population in the United States and are often passed on from parents to their kids.

We have the first generation to come of age in the digital age, and these kids are different. They’re the biggest generation ever, and they think, and work, and play, and collaborate very differently than their parents, and there’s no more powerful force to change every institution than the first

Looking back a decade or so ago it was absolutely essential to have an office, or more likely, a cubicle. That’s where we had meetings, saw our coworkers, and just got work done. But today do we really need corporate offices? New technologies allow us to “connect to work,” meaning that all we need to get work done is an internet connection. Employees are working from co-working spots, cafes, and home offices all over the world without ever having to step foot into a corporate office. In fact the 2013 Regus Global Economic Indicatorof 26,000 business managers across 90 countries, revealed that 48% of them are now working remotely for at least half of their work-week.
