Growing Local - University of Nebraska Press

Growing Local - University of Nebraska Press | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In an increasingly commercialized world, the demand for better quality, healthier food has given rise to one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. food system: locally grown food. Many believe that “relocalization” of the food system will provide a range of public benefits, including lower carbon emissions, increased local economic activity, and closer connections between consumers, farmers, and communities. The structure of local food supply chains, however, may not always be capable of generating these perceived benefits.

Corporate vision of the future of food promoted at the UN

(Rome, Monday 15 February, 2016) Just when the biotech companies that make transgenic seeds are merging, the corporate vision of biotechnology is showing up at FAO. At today’s opening of the three-day International symposium on agricultural biotechnologies convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, more than 100 civil society and social movement and organizations (CSOs) from four continents have issued a statement denouncing both the substance and structure of the meeting, which appears to be another attempt by multinational agribusiness to redirect the policies of the UN agency toward support for Genetically-engineered crops and livestock.

My 2016 Life Experiment: Can I Thrive Living Exclusively on the Sharing Economy?

My 2016 Life Experiment: Can I Thrive Living Exclusively on the Sharing Economy? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In September last year, I spent a month seeing if I could survive in the sharing economy in London. It was hard. However, one of the reasons it was so hard was I was traveling. I only had a backpack and laptop with me, so I could not leverage the two profitable areas of the sharing economy -- stuff and space.

Reflections on Rural Wireless: Sarantaporo — unMonastery Stories — Medium

Reflections on Rural Wireless: Sarantaporo - unMonastery Stories - Medium

The wireless network in Sarantaporo could be quite revolutionary as a form of resistance to global capital’s land grabbing and industrial agriculture: if by using open source hardware and software independent farming can be made to be less oppressive and incite more people make the “exodus to the countryside” (or just not leave in the first place), then you might be able maintain some autonomy within the global food chain. Hell, maybe the pensioners can even run the farms remotely from their tablets using FarmBots. Either way, it’s just the beginning, especially since Sarantaporo.gr just qualified for the Ashoka Impact Program in Greece.

Yardfarming - P2P Foundation

Yardfarming - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"Industrial agriculture concentrates social power and exacerbates problems of food insecurity and poverty, whereas small-scale organic farming on an individual or community level can significantly distribute social power across communities all over the world. An approach like this is one we like to call “yardfarming” (a concept we’ve spent the last year advocating for through www.Yardfarmers.us).

Nachbarschaftsakademie – 15th Garden english

Nachbarschaftsakademie – 15th Garden english | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Neighborhood Academy in Prinzessinnengarten presented in March 2016 the 15th Garden, a support network for independent food sovereignty in Syria, with an evening of discussion, food and music. The “15th Garden“ is a Syrian-European network that for the last two years has supported urban gardens and agricultural projects in and outside Syria. The network aims to strengthen independent food production in times of conflict; and above all, to sow the foundations for postwar food sovereignty.

Victor Lanselle's curator insight, March 19, 2016 10:02 AM
"They created gardens on rooftops, in backyards, between the ruins of bombed houses, built irrigation systems and organised seeds. These gardens play an important role for the local food supply and for local self-determination, under siege."

“Despite 300 years of industrialisation 156 of 196 modern states are agrarian; that is, their economies remain land based. Their assets cover two thirds of the world’s land area and cater to 87% of its population. Directly dependent rural dwellers number three billion or 42% of the world’s population.
