More than a hundred baby seals are recuperating at Dutch and U.K. nurseries after being stranded amid recent storms, experts say. The incident is an extreme example among a recent increase in pup strandings, experts say. Overfishing has reduced the seals' available prey, and the polluted fish the animals do catch often make them sick. "In the last two or three years we have seen more and more seals wash up too weak to look after themselves," Lenie 't Hart, director of the Zeehondencrèche seal nursery, told AFP.

Wandering albatrosses have altered their foraging due to changes in wind fields in the southern hemisphere during the last decades. Since winds have increased in intensity and moved to the south, the flight speed of albatrosses increased and they spend less time foraging. As a consequence, breeding success has improved and birds have gained 1 kilogram.

Two thirds of the North Atlantic fish stocks are overfished and almost a quarter of all catches are wasted, thrown back into the sea - dead or dying. After two lean years of Alaska Bering Sea pollock harvests, 2011 was supposed to be a return to normalcy with a quota set near the historic average at 1.25 million metric tons. The season ended with a thud, though, as some 54,000 metric tons were left in the water following the “B” season that starts June 10 and ends Nov. 1. The shore-based catcher fleet reported difficulties finding the fish, poor catch rates and soaring encounters with both chinook and chum salmon bycatch as effort extended deeper into the fall.
