The ability to network with colleagues outside our institutions has never been greater thanks to technology - yet so many of our academic colleagues work in very closed ways. (Something for the group on enthusing staff in TEL)

MOOCstream: Facial Biometrics: A Solution or a Problem for MOOCs Assessments? | open course on Technology Enhanced Learning - ocTEL | Scoop.it

Why using Facial Biometrics in MOOCs?
The increase interest in MOOCs, and the recent offering of specialization certificates in selected MOOCs, requires more secure online identity verification systems. Therefore, MOOCs providers are looking for the right formula to authenticate MOOC takers. Facial biometrics is one of the solutions.

Facial Biometrics used by Coursera.
Students registered in selected Coursera MOOCs have the option to register trough Signature Track to obtain a Specialization Certificate. According to Coursera, this software “securely links your coursework to your identity, allowing you to confidently show the world what you’ve achieved on Coursera.”

The architecture of productive learning networks | Terry Anderson | The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning

[…] the authors set forth an initial set of architectural entities that describe and define a network of individuals associated together in order to collectively achieve some goal. As the title implies, these associations are focused on learning but in a very broad sense that includes formal education, informal and professional learning, and social action. The structures that we devise and sustain to support this learning are referred to as networks – aggregations based upon connections of people and resources, that in this context are focused on learning – and of course doing so productively.

Via Peter B. Sloep
Rose Heaney's insight:

Terry Anderson is always worth a read. Productive learning networks seem to be very relevant to our current interactions on ocTEL

Peter B. Sloep's curator insight, May 1, 2014 3:21 PM

The scooped article reviews a book edited by Lucila Carvalho and Peter Goodyear. It contains a collection of stories on networked learning that share the intention to look at learning networks as designed entities. As one of the contributors to the book I should say no more about it and let Terry Anderson’s review speak for itself. However, if his review does wet your appetite I should perhaps confess that I myself am quite enamoured with the collection of articles that has emerged. I genuinely belief this book, to which I only made a very small contribution, marks an important step in the efforts to come up with a theoretical foundation for networked learning. @pbsloep

David moves away from the digital native/immigrant discussion and suggests another lens for looking at differences in online network participation: are you more of a resident or more of a visitor? Very worthwhile.

Response to Dron (on Connectivism) - by Stephen Downes

Response to Dron (on Connectivism) - by Stephen Downes | open course on Technology Enhanced Learning - ocTEL | Scoop.it

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Rose Heaney's insight:

This is a bit mind boggling & beyond my limited cognitive powers - but together maybe we can process it!  It is relevant to octel too.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 1, 2014 3:28 AM

"Let me review, for those who are just skimming this post:

Connectionism - the theory describing how networks learn

Connectivism - the theory applying that understanding to education

Whether you say one or another is or is not a theory interests me not in the least. But I would assert that (a) each is a distinct understanding of learning that can be distinguished from other approaches that genuinely are called theories, and (b) neither is widely adopted (much less consensus opinion) in learning technology, or education generally, today."
