Coral Aquaculture for Reef Restoration and Adaptation

Overcoming bottlenecks in coral reproduction and settlement. At the Australian Institute of Marine Science, we reliably breed corals in the National Sea Simulator for research. But to breed corals to improve reef recovery at larger scales, we first need to improve the survival rate of the young corals when deployed, onto the Reef. The Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program is developing and testing a suite of interventions to help the Great Barrier Reef resist, adapt to, and recover from climate change impacts. Coral aquaculture is a key component of several interventions which will help fast-track the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef.

- How do scientists up-scale the reproduction of coral larvae?
- How do researchers use coral seeding to enhance the survival and growth of coral young?

The Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
