Fiber Optic Installation Project in Newtown Borough Links Data Centers | Newtown News of Interest | Scoop.it
Fiber Optic Installation Project (LightPath)
A regional infrastructure project to install underground fiber optic cabling is set to impact major borough thoroughfares. The project serves a new data center in Falls Township designed to handle large-scale artificial intelligence data processing.
  • Scope of Work: The installation involves directional boring and excavation within the PennDOT right-of-way.
  • Affected Areas:
    • North side of Washington Avenue (Borough line to State Street).
    • West side of South State Street (Washington to Centre Avenue).
    • South side of Centre Avenue (South State Street to the Township line).
  • Technical Methods: Contractors will use "vacuum digging" to locate utility laterals. The project requires "coffin-sized" access holes every 200 feet.
  • Project Status: Currently paused. Borough officials and state representatives intervened after determining that LightPath failed to provide accurate advance notice or adequate communication regarding traffic impacts and residential property disruption.
  • Borough Requirements for Resumption: A public information session, direct resident notification, and a detailed project schedule.

johnmacknewtown's insight:

The primary driver of the current activity is a massive $20 billion data center development by Amazon Data Services on the site of the former U.S. Steel mill in Falls Township.

  • The Goal: To create a strategic technology campus supporting cloud computing and AI innovation.

  • The LightPath Connection: LightPath is a fiber-based connectivity provider tasked with installing "AI-grade" underground cabling to link these critical digital destinations. The route passes through several neighboring municipalities, including Newtown Borough.
