Swedish defence and security company Saab is teaming with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group to explore future opportunities in the international submarine market. The companies have signed an exclusive teaming agreement to work together in pursuit of the potential Walrus-class submarine replacement programme for the Netherlands. In addition to this project, Saab and Damen will also explore ways in which they might bid jointly on other submarine procurement programmes. Through the acquisition of Kockums Saab has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of submarines and surface vessels for a global customer base, integrating advanced systems and using a range of ultra-modern materials and construction techniques. Key technology includes Saab’s unique Air Independent Propulsion System based on the Stirling engine. In addition, Saab delivers many complex defence programmes in cooperation with governmental and commercial partners in customer nations worldwide. Damen delivers about 160 vessels annually and is known for its unique ship-design concepts, due to its sharp focus on research and development, standardisation and modularisation. Its defence and security portfolio includes vessels ranging in size from 7 m to over 200 m. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (established in 1875) supplies major surface vessels to navies worldwide. Saab and Damen, both independently-owned companies, are confident that their combined skills, expertise and substantial R&D capacity will accelerate submarine development. Hein van Ameijden, managing director of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, says:“we are convinced that with Saab we have found the ideal partner to realise a successor to the present Walrus class; a vessel that will set a new standard for non-nuclear submarines. The complementarity of both our companies opens up the potential for a successful cooperation in more submarine programmes worldwide.” GunillaFransson, head of Saab business area, Security and Defence Solutions says:“Saab Kockums is looking forward to cooperating with the experienced shipbuilders at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. We have the full support of our Swedish customer in broadening our customer base to include a new demanding high-end customer.”

DOHA, QATAR — Showcasing a wealth of new designs and featuring a major tie-in with a local shipyard, Dutch shipbuilder and design firm Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is continuing its aggressive moves to become a major supplier of small warships and auxiliaries to burgeoning navies.Among the innovative designs is a new Mission Flexible Combatant (MFC), a versatile design aimed at smaller navies that lack bigger ships. “The whole concept is aimed at getting a credible combat capability into a multimission ship,” said Rene Hoogenboom, production manager for amphibious support ships at Damen. Shown for the first time here at the Doha International Maritime and Defence Exhibition (DIMDEX), the MFC is similar in concept to the larger Danish Abselon-class flexible support ship, which offers major gun and missile weapons and a mission bay capable of transporting military equipment, including tanks. Koen Audenaert, a Daman naval architect working on the MFC, acknowledged its similarity to the Absalon, but he pointed to significant changes. “The difference is in the aft part,” he said, pointing to a model of the ship. The MFC, while smaller, features a fixed stern ramp, offering direct access for rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) and smaller landing craft. The Absalon, Audenaert pointed out, has no boat ramp, and it can only launch small craft via an overhead boom. “This is a simple, elegant design,” Audenaert said. The ship’s multimission bay can be configured to handle a variety of missions, including mine laying and countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare and special forces support. Equipment is moved via two overhead gantry cranes. Boats are retrieved on the ramp via an automatic wire system. RHIBs come up the ramp and trip a crosswire, which then secures the craft. “It’s a hands-free operation,” Audenaert said. Like many Damen designs, the MFC can be configured in a variety of sizes and patterns, emphasizing different missions, capabilities and costs. Brochures describe ships ranging from designs 115 meters to 139 meters in length, displacing from 4,500 metric tons to 5,600 metric tons. Mission sets range from a low end of security versions, to combatant, amphibious and logistic variants. Damen also is a partner in a shipyard venture here with Nakilat, a major transporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) products. Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar is co-located in the port of Ras Laffan with Nakilat-Keppel Offshore and Marine Ltd. (NKOM), a repair facility able to handle the largest LNG tankers. The facilities are situated in deep water on reclaimed land at the end of an 8-kilometer-long breakwater. Nearly 3,000 employees work at the side-by-side facilities, said Fairuz Aledroos, a marketing executive with NKOM. Since 2010, the Nakilat Damen facility has built smaller ships for commercial work, as well as tugboats for the Qatari Navy. The shipyard is able to build ships up to lengths of 170 meters in a covered building, launching vessels via a level transfer facility. Damen officials said the yard can build steel, aluminum or fiber-reinforced plastic ships. They said the yard positions the company to strongly compete for naval designs in the Gulf region.

During Vietship 2014 Nava Exhibition in Vietnam, Dutch shipyard Damen unveiled for the first time the design of the Sigma 9814 Corvette ordered by Vietnam. It was announced in October 2011 that Damen shipyard in Vlissingen, Netherlands will build four Sigma corvettes for the Vietnamese Navy. The first two ships will be built in Vlissingen (Netherlands), and the last two (options) will be built in Vietnam, under Dutch supervision. Based on previously published information and from what can be seen on the model shown at Vietship 2014 the new SIGMA 9814 class will be fitted with: 8x MBDA Exocet MM40 Block 3 12x MBDA MICA VL surface-to-air missiles (in VLS) 1x Oto Melara 76mm main gun 2x Oto Melara MARLIN-WS 30mm gun mounts The corvette will acomodate one anti-submarine helicopters Ka-28. The corvettes are set to receive the latest generation of electronics and sensors from Thales including TACTICOS combat management system, SMART-S Mk 2 radar and STING EO Mk 2 electro-optical fire control system. Design wise, the new Sigma 9814 differs quite a lot combared to existing Sigma designs (9813, 10513 or 10514) especially around the bridge area. Likewise, the bow appears to be more angled to possibly provide more stealth.

Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL held a steel-cutting ceremony for the Indonesian Navy's (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Laut's/TNI-AL's) second SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided-missile frigate in Surabaya, Indonesia, on 17 September. The vessel is being built jointly with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) under a contract signed in 2013 by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence. The contract follows a prior tender, signed in June 2012, to construct the first ship. Both frigates are being assembled from six major block modules in an arrangement aimed at transferring naval shipbuilding expertise from DSNS to PT PAL. In the first vessel, four modules were built by PT PAL and two supplied by DSNS.

Damen has recently signed a contract with Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos (Astinave) to construct two Damen SPa’s 5009 for the Ecuadorian Coastguard. The Ecuadorian shipyard will build both vessels locally with Damen Technical Cooperation, which is Damen’s method of ‘building on site’. Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC) will supply Astinave with prefabricated kits to build both vessels. As well as the numerous advantages that local construction brings to the contract-signing table, DTC uses proven Damen designs that guarantee technical and operational performance. Due to the sheer complexity of building the Stan Patrol 5009, Damen’s agreement with Astinave includes on-site technical assistance during the construction and commissioning periods. Strategic alliance Although this latest contract represents the first Damen Stan Patrol 5009 for Astinave, the yard has built up considerable experience with Damen designs over the years. Customer specifications The Ecuadorian Coastguard will mobilise the two new Damen SPa’s 5009 for general patrol duties – benefitting from a top speed of 23 knots provided by four fixed-pitch propellers. They specified that both vessels had the capacity to accommodate 32 people operating for up to 30 days without external support – something that required a number of design adaptations. Ecuador’s Coastguard already operates three Damen SPa’s 2606, with a fourth currently under construction at Astinave’s facilities on the banks of the Guayas River. After delivery of the two patrol vessels, the fleet will total six Damen builds.
