The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) was meant to transform the fight to protect forests worldwide. Instead, the European Commission has repeatedly postponed its rollout, citing IT problems. However, an investigation by Follow the Money raises questions about whether the delays can solely be blamed on technical failures, or if industry interests are shaping decisions behind the scenes in Brussels.

But the legislation was quickly diluted after industry lobbying. Journalist Hans Wetzels obtained leaked documents suggesting that the U-turn was largely driven by pressure from Washington.

After the European Commission today declared an “economic and social emergency”, trade unions say it must now deliver the new money and laws needed to end this crisis.
