With it's strong Celtic heritage, breathtaking coastline and plenty of friendly people. Brittany is one of the most unique French regions to explore. It is the most north-western region, and is famed for its Pink Granite Coast. When booking a french holiday, most people automatically consider a city break to Paris or Strasbourg, a ski…

There’s more to the Loire than its châteaux. Follow the Loire towards the Atlantic and you’ll reach Nantes, a sprawling city with a vibrant arts scene, historic buildings aplenty and over a hundred parks and gardens. We had just shy of eight hours to see as much of the city as possible, and true to…

Looking for a day trip outside of Paris? Nantes, France has long been something of a hidden gem. Located about an hour south of Paris, it has all the trappings of a typical charming French town: historic buildings, excellent cuisine, and a genuine castle. But it also has a healthy dose of quirkiness. Once a renowned shipping port (and the birthplace of Jules Verne), it has reinvented itself as a hub for the arts, with a variety of public projects and festivals celebrating the creative spirit of the place. And by far the most interesting of these projects is Les Machines de l’ile, a steampunk theme park that owes as much to Leonardo Da Vinci as to its famous native son. The park is still very much a work in progress, which is part of what makes visiting it so delightful. Even more exciting? Seeing the amazing inventions that are already there.

If you arrive by boat to Nantes in western France, you’ll quickly understand what makes the city (the country’s sixth largest) such an unusual and thrilling place. Scattered all along the Loire river on the way into the city are massive public artworks, including a skeletal sea-snake and a typical French stone house that’s sat…

Nantes is a beautiful city, well worth a visit! I particularly recommend visiting it in July-August, which is when the yearly “Voyage à Nantes” takes place. In a nutshell the Voyage à Nantes is an artistic trail past temporary or permanent installations of public art works throughout the city of Nantes: a painted green line…

While technically not in the Brittany region, Nantes is still a city which has its roots in Brittany's culture. Located about an hour's drive from Rennes, it was where I ended my extended Easter weekend during my first year teaching in France. Although I didn't stay too long in town, I got to get a…
