'Waarom heeft die man eigenlijk een meisjesnaam?', vroeg ik me gisteren af toen ik las dat oud-Feyenoordvoorzitter Jorien van den Herik zich heeft uitgesproken tegen de bouw van een nieuw stadion.

Jorien: until 1943, it was exclusively a male name, albeit an uncommon one. Then girls started to be called Jorien, and now they outnumber the male Joriens by 1138 to 23. The name's done a shift within van den Herik's lifetime.

There are some surprises here (I woudln't have expected Kerry and Joan to be more male), some names that make sense as more male when we consider various language/ethnic groups (Jan, Dominique), and some names that I hadn't realised were ever female (Toby, Shawn). Interesting stuff.
